2006 Suburban Z71 Superchip mod
I've read several reviews for the superchip mod for my Suburban and have read dozens of customers praising the results. I bought it for my 2006 Suburban Z71, so I can get a little better performance when towing my boat and general around town acceleration. Also I like the ability it gives me to recalibrate the speedo if I decide to get bigger tires. While I don't plan on abusing the burb, its nice to know the acceleration is improved when I need it. Does anyone have any experience with Superchips? I normally buy 91 or better octane fuel anyway so I think I should be able to tune it for performance and let me, instead of the computer, decide how much I want to baby the burb. I'll post my results when it arrives. For now, in stock form, I can definitely tell the electronic throttle control doesn't give me full power right away when I floor it.

Re: 2006 Suburban Z71 Superchip mod
I just installed the performance program and it does accelerate and respond better. Normally the computer applies the throttle gradually so that I never burnt the tires but the big burb burnt 'em...not like a supercharged big block but it barked them. I only drove it around the neighborhood, but I'll test it more on the highway soon. I think I'll drive it down to the parts store and get a K&N filter so it breathes a bit better for the performance mod.

Nice, that sounds cool. If you get an aftermarket air filter, you should just get the intake too, as well as a nice exhaust.

Re: 2006 Suburban Z71 Superchip mod
Sweet, I have been toyin with the idea of a program for a while now. The difference in performance between my 03 and 04 to my 06 is staggering, partially because I didnt check the rear gear ratio (3.42) but mostly because of the stock programming. How much did you spend?

Sounds nice. You should get a catback exhaust and a high performance intake and filter if you really want it to be a beast and remove any of the bottlenecks of airflow in the engine. Headers do get quite expensive though.

Re: 2006 Suburban Z71 Superchip mod
I drove it around town last night and it got 18mpg...in town. That's great! I'd like to see how it does on the highway, but with the way it feels, I'm confident it will perform better and get better gas mileage. Keep in mind I use the performance tune and 91 octane gas. I can tell I don't have to put my foot into it as much just driving around town....but when I want to jump ahead of someone....noooo problem.
As far as the other mods, I think I'll just do a cat back and intake. That should be enough for what I use the burb for. Now when I get a new camaro....I'll go all out! |

Sounds like you are pleased with the modification. I have been considering the same purchase for my Silverado.

Re: 2006 Suburban Z71 Superchip mod
I'd love to get one of these for my dads truck. The drive by wire response is sickening. However, if your turning slightly and the power comes in, it burns the tires like crazy. Even with 3.42s.

Re: 2006 Suburban Z71 Superchip mod
I've replaced the air filter with a K&N, which especially helps here where its hot and humid. I've read that the stock paper type filters can actually clog and collaspe in high humidity conditions. The Burb has great response and tows like a beast now. I towed my boat this weekend, Its like the vehicle lost 1000lbs. Today I remembered to hit the disable button for the stability control system. Man did the burb really fly then. When the 4 speed shifts it shifts stronger and you can actually feel the acceleration in the seat, whereas before it felt like the computer made the engine reduce power while shifting. I'm really impressed with the 5.3L, GM has been tuning it for the average driver to keep them out of trouble....and court. I'd highly recommend anyone who is complaining about the computer inhibits of thier newer GM truck or SUV to get the chip and do some minor intake and exhaust mods. You'll be impressed how your vehicle performs. My wife even noticed how peppy the burb is now....its only a matter of time before she will want a programmer for her CTS.

I've tossed around the idea of an intake/exhaust/chip change in our truck, but think I will wait till I get the Mustang traded in and have a vehicle to screw around with of my own. Kinda want to look into a diesel, the increase in power that simple bolt ons will provide is crazy.
