Will VE Win 'Wheels Car Of The Year' Award?

I was just checking out the previous years winners on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheels_Car_of_the_Year) and I noticed the first of each new generation Commodore (VB, VN & VT) have won it. Will Wheels continue the tradition and award COTY to VE? What do think? I believe the winner will be announced at the end of January 2007.

It deserves to win, but after Aurion won another award today i'm starting to wonder if Toyota has the press all wrapped up.

No, the almighty holy god on wheels aka Toyota Aurion will win the award.

Re: Will VE win Wheels car of the year award?

If the Omega didn't count, the Commodore would have the contest shot to pieces. This is the car that lets the whole team down. The 4L60-E and optional air-con in the Omega are the two things that could deny the VE the award. But surely they wouldn't give it to the Aurion. Unless of course they want everyone to cancel their subscriptions. I know I sure as hell will. I don't really care what wins it, as long as the Aurion doesn't. It is very average in every area except its engine and transmission. And you can still argue that the engine isn't the right one for the job, with nothing below 3500 revs. But remember 1973... Leyland P76 won... and 1982... when the Holden Camira won... and 1996, the Mitsubishi Magna... so I suppose there's half a chance. Oh and btw, the current score is 9 to Holden, 5 to Ford, and Toyota is yet to get off the mark

Re: Will VE win Wheels car of the year award?

Wheels car of the year tests the merits of all the models. Which will a be a pretty large task when you consider the "commodore" line up: Omega, Berlina, SV6, SS, SS-V, Calais (HFV6 and V8) Calais V (HFV6 and V8). Nine vehicles! You cant really cross section the line up with less than 3 vehicles either.

I wouldn't be too confident that Commodore will romp away with it, but the test is too concise to miss things like 4up torque through a hilly, curvy road circuit (which is a regular feature of COTY). This and space will count against the Aurion.

The problem is that they consider so much, it is exceptionally difficult to predict the winner. In fact it gets harder every year, but this time we have John Carey (deputy Editor and hard to please wheel nut), whom appreciated the value, durability and advancement of the VE Platform so much that he rated the Omega, his pick of the bunch.

Re: Will VE win Wheels car of the year award?

I hope it wins seeing as this is the only COTY that matters, but I'm not confident. Wheels can be pretty harsh when it comes to cost cutting like 4 speed auto's, cheap V6's.

Aurion. No way!

Re: Will VE win Wheels car of the year award?

Its just a number! The 4 speed is plenty good enough for the average joe. I know they could do better, but cost is a consideration. Remember how nearly every model costs less (although I think that model name shuffling is more responsible for this)?

Oh trust me, Americans love to bash about cars with 4-speeds. It's either 5-speed (or 6-speed) or they'd rather walk. The general reception of the VE Commodore was amazing as expected and our guys at CSS love the Commodore and they despise the Aurion. I don't see what's special about the Aurion. It's just a tarted up Camry. It's the Omega version of the Commodore that turns me off but the rest is awesome and it deserves to win the award. I'd be surprised if it didn't as the Commodore seems to be really popular in Down Under.

I'm pretty confident the Commodore has it in the bag, but then there's always the Caprice to take the award if the Commodore falls short.

I think the VE will win, esp since the SV6 beat the Aurion in the jan07 test.
