Sydney Motor Show: Toyota Supercharged Aurion Sports Concept

Supercharged Aurion Points To Future

Marton Pettendy
26 October 2006
www.goauto.com.au

Toyota reckons Australia's home-grown sports sedan market has been the exclusive domain of Holden and Ford for far too long.

As a result, the Aurion Sports Concept is the first tangible evidence of how the nation’s top-selling automotive brand plans to rectify that.

Revealed this morning at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney alongside the Aurion sedan, which also made its Australian public debut before officially tackling the Commodore and Falcon large-car dominance in showrooms from next week, the Toyota Style Australia-built Aurion show car is a preview of the force-fed, Toyota Racing Development-tuned Aurion performance flagship that will go on sale in the second quarter of 2007.

The hottest version of Toyota's first legitimate large sedan will aim directly at the likes of Ford's XR and Holden's SS nameplates, which comprise up to 30 per cent of Falcon and Commodore sales.

Ultimate Aurion Revealed

Toyota has previewed the supercharged version of its new Aurion V6 large car that will next year tackle Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore sports models head-on.

Labelled the "Aurion Sports Concept Car", it was revealed this morning by Aussie basketball superstar Lauren Jackson and Toyota Australia designer Nick Hogios.

The standard Aurion V6 large car, which goes on sale October 30, also made its motor show debut after pricing and specification levels were announced mid-month.

The production version of the Aurion Sports Concept is due to go on-sale mid-2007. Developed locally by TRD Australia - a division of Toyota Australia - about 1500 per year will be built at a plant in Melbourne.

That actually looks pretty nice. LOVE that front end.

If that was rwd, it would sell, and sell well.

Mitsubishi and Toyota both make good large sedans, but large fwd sedans for the same price as Commodores and Falcons JUST WONT SELL in Australia, where large rwd sedans have been on top of the sales charts since ....... well, ever since motoring came to this country?. Why cant they get this?

I actually like it.

To me, it looks like a VW, Camry, and Lexus all smashed into one.

Damn, why does Australia get all the goods? It should be RWD, as it has the looks and the power. The rear diffuser is a nice addition and likely derived from Formula 1.

As nice as this looks, I'm still curious how a car based on an exisiting midsize platform with the same sized interior is considered a 'legitimate' large sedan.

Should be. The base engine generates 272hp/254lb-ft, so S/C'd, I'd expect somewhere around 330hp/300lb-ft.

However, the last S/C'd Toyota V6, the 1MZ produced 200hp/214lb-ft stock, and 281hp/265lb-ft S/C'd. A very nice increase. I'm not sure what type of S/C TRD is using for the 3.5L though.

I'd take any of the Commodores over that car any day of the week. I won't even mention the HSV versions because they blow that out of the water.

I've never met a Toyota that I liked. I need to see this one in person to find something wrong with it.
