Re: Some old Holden Ads

About a minute into this compilation, an HQ Kingswood ad complete with the theme from Shaft as backing track.

The old man emu couldn't outrun the Kingy...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtDJkezgw58

The Repco brake ad is intersting - testing asbestos based brake pads without even a face mask...

And the impeccable production quality of the Dencorub ad is astounding...

Gotta love that last link. Izaac Hayes has nothing on the Holden ad voice-over man!

Re: Classic Holden TV Ad's

That's a shocker! I really thought the HX was one of the ugliest series in the 70's.

Re: Classic Holden TV Ad's

Only minor visual differences between HJ and HX, just grille & badgework etc. But the HX mechanical package was dismally uncompetitive when measured against Falcon or Valiant. This model represented the final edition of chronic Holden formula-understeer, coupled to a hopeless attempt at mastering the new ADR-27A emission regs. Who remembers the non-performing 6 cyl which ran hot (burned valves & cracked head) as it chewed through the juice, or that manic 2500+rpm cold-idle on the 308s?

Thank heavens for the HZ! And speaking of which, I reckon those brilliant HZ RTS 'handling' ads (which apart from a brief verbal intro, contained no voice-over at all) were about the most effective piece of automotive advertising I have ever seen

Any chance these ads exist online?

I agree except for the GTS - the colour coded bumpers and big black bonnet stripe looked hot. My best mate had a yellow and black 5litre manual and it was a very nice car.

My dad had an HJ 253 Kingswood sedan, thankfully he saw no reason to upgrade.

Not a bad show for claytons power lol!

Had a look too but couldn't find anything. It's a pity this RTS advert series isn't reproduced somewhere - it made an amazing public impact at the time. From faded memory the verbal intro consisted of something like this "Same corner, same speed. We're not going to say anything more - just watch." then pure vision depicting a humble Kingswood SL 4.2 as it serenely negotiated a corner at Oran Park raceway, leading into footage of a multitude of opposing marques in various states of high drama as they attempted to do likewise

The 'independant' driver used in these ads was then-current Gold Star open-wheeler champ John Leffler. An extended compilation (shown in movie theatres) was the best version; apart from the smooth handling HZ it featured maybe eight or ten different vehicles ranging from Falcon, Valiant and schitzoid Cortina through plough-understeering Rover P6 and capsizing Volvo, to the vaunted BMW 5-series - in reality a three legged dog, see attached pic

It's a long time ago now but I think the genesis of those TV ads was this cover story in Modern Motor magazine. Their test 528i was furnished via BMW Australia while Modern Motor were careful for reasons of demonstrable non-bias to source their Kingswood test vehicle .. from Budget rentacar!

BMW refused to supply Modern Motor with test cars for quite a few years afterwards
