Award season is 'ere: Carsales People's Choice Awards

People's Choice Awards: Kia Rio finishes first

Kia's Rio has taken out two wins in this year's carsales.com.au People's Choice Awards. The light-segment hatch not only placed first in its category – People's Choice First Car – it also topped the polling across all 13 categories to be named the carsales People’s Choice Winner.

“The carsales People’s Choice Awards’ dual recognition for the Kia Rio is another wonderful endorsement for the car and for the brand," said Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer Tony Barlow. “It is particularly satisfying when the votes are cast by people who are actively engaged in making a purchasing decision.”

Clearly the diminutive Rio was a favourite among the voters, but Kia wasn't the sole company to score wins in more than one category; Toyota, Mazda and Ford also achieved that feat. Toyota actually picked up three awards, with Camry Hybrid topping the poll for the People's Choice Green Car, LandCruiser 200 Series securing the People's Choice Offroad 4x4 award, and the Toyota 86 sharing its win with its badge-engineered sibling, the Subaru BRZ, as People's Choice Performance Car Under $100k. Mazda3 and Mazda CX-5 each won an award, as did Ford's Territory and Ranger models.

The 13 lifestyle categories by which the various cars were selected mirror the search options shoppers can use to find vehicles they want on the various carsales network sites. For 2012, the People's Choice Awards are based on the motoring.com.au editorial team settling on the finalists, with winners in each category then decided by popular vote from the public. To be considered, each of the cars had to be on sale and driven by motoring.com.au prior to September 1 this year.

"All of the finalists nominated across the carsales People’s Choice Award categories are strong performers. But the new format of the awards is a chance for our audience of genuine new car shoppers to voice its opinion," said Managing Director and CEO of carsales.com Ltd, Greg Roebuck.

"The carsales network of websites attracts more Australians buying and researching new car purchases than any other – they are well informed and that adds even more kudos to a category or outright win."

Holden had just one nominee for the 2012 period and that was the Volt in the Green Car category. The perennial favourite in the Tradie category, Commodore Ute wasn't even on the list.

What a load of horse ****. Notice how the established peoples choice winner for the previous 2 years was not even nominated once. Infact there isn't a single Holden aside from the Volt. The Large car category was eliminated in favour of family cars, but the family cars over 30k are all SUVs to go with the separate SUV categories!!!! Tin hats? nope, just blatant horse****.
    What a ****ing crime.

Kia Rio is a nice little jobbie though.

While the logic of the new "family car" category does seem to follow the trend of SUV over sedans they did include 2 non-SUVs in the mix of 5. Honda Odyssey and the Subaru Exige. It almost feels like it should have been called "people movers" as all nominated models have 7 seats. I noticed however that there are no Mid-sized sedans nominated either as they don't seem to have a category to be nominated in.

Apart from the Ute which Holdens should have been on the list? Excluding the Family car $30K+ the rest of the categories seem to include the best of the market right now.

So, how do cars get nominated and how do people vote on it? Maybe next year we get GMI members to vote for anything Holden and turn it into a Logies type farce?

They're "peoples choice" clearly only had editorial (and possibly advertising) people in mind. People have been choosing the Captiva over every other SUV in the SUVs over 30k segment aside from the Territory (which incidentally won). They did, however, include the old generation Hyundai Santa Fe which was handily outsold (to PEOPLE) every month by the Captiva.

Quote is not working well for me right now but yeah this type of award is already a farce no need to take it further

At least Wheels COTY still has a small shred of credibility left even if they did sell out to channel nein

Mik we can't have the Captiva win anything because we all know they are rubbish Daewoo rebadged Holdens

What I don't understand is that the Mazda 3 is still so popular. I recent review I read about it was that it can be as thirsty (or more) as a 6 cylinder on the highway and bl**dy noisy as well.

PS - We bought a Santa Fe - the Captiva was too small and the Ford salesman were a punch of w*nkers to deal with so they lost 1 possible sale there.

But with that logic the Corolla should have been nominated, as should the Toyota Hilux. The Territory is a better car than the Captiva, plus it has a hometown advantage. This award is a popular vote which is a boon for winners to advertise. Heck Holden did it's fair share when the Ute won all those times.

Volt is nominated in Green car category.

Realistically though, beyond the Volt, Holden hasn't released any solid new models this year so it's no surprise there is limited representation. The Colorado has been completely overshadowed by the Ford Ranger, VW Amorak and Mazda BT-50 and the disappointing Barina came last in Wheels mega test so I hardly thought it would get a shortlist nod let alone a win.
