Police Holden Commodore's To Get Smarter

Cop Commodores To Get Smarter

Ian Porter
16 August 2007
www.drive.com.au

Australian police cars could soon share much in common with James Bond's Aston Martin.

Forget about James Bond's Aston Martin. Soon the humble police Commodore will have more computers than a typical science lab and be able to launch laser-guided projectiles from its grille onto wanted cars so they can be tracked anywhere.

Other clever technology being evaluated for police forces around the country include an automatic number plate reader which can scan more than 8000 number plates in one shift while a police car patrols the roads, checking for stolen or unregistered cars.

The emergency and enforcement systems are being assessed as part of a program by the National Safety Agency to produce safer and more effective vehicles for the nation's emergency services.

The laser-guided projectiles would be used if car that has been pulled over starts to pull away suddenly, said Des Bahr, managing director of the NSA.

"The officer can use a remote control unit to project the GPS (global positioning satellite) transponder from the police vehicle as the other vehicle moves off. Then the police can simply track the vehicle."

The transponder attaches to the target vehicle with an ''aggressive adhesive'' which is very difficult to remove, Mr Bahr said.

Can't wait to see something like this in 2010-2012 as the new Impala cop cars.

It's the Mcd's Big Mac. They use it for the gps tracker. The ''aggressive adhesive'' is the secret sauce. LOL

This is pretty cool, the technology of police cars are just getting cooler and cooler every day.

That is a very scary looking vehicle

I'm surprised that there is so much cabling and very little, if any, fibre optics. There's a lot of extra weight that doesn't need to be there.

Obviously you haven't seen 95% of all Police cruisers in our Country!!! LOL. The above setup is one of the cleanest I've ever seen. Most setups are spaghetti wires stuffed underneath floorboards and rearseats! LOL. The above car was actually created by University of New Hampshire students (not City motorpools) with grant money. Basically the whole thing is a experiment that is apparently catching on. Of course cabling is more cost effective than fiber optics.

On a side note, I'd have to crown the Holden Commodore the king of the Aussie cruisers and the Dodge Charger the king of the American cruisers.

Fromwhat I have seen on TV agianst the size of most cops this weight is negligible! The black charger looks cool.
I find the sign on the side amusing "In pursuit of excellence" Aren't they chasing the ones who aren't excellent and are about to get caught?
