Re: New FPV Territory F6X Turbo Released - The World's Fastest SUV!

I'd say the journos are referring to 'compared to anything else tested in Oz' which does include the Cayenne Turbo amongst several others in that list.

I don't understand how US publications get the figures they do. For instance, the best figures here for the auto SV6 are in the mid-high sevens, whereas several testers in the US got the G8 V6 (same car) in the high sixes. Different tune? Different methodology?

The BMW X5 4.4 has an official 0-100 time here of 7.5 secs. Whereas in the US, it's a second faster. 100 kmh is 62mph, but still, that's not that different.

I know the publications here by agreement basically test with half a tank, two people, tyres at nominal and no torque braking. Perhaps that's the diff?

Funny to see the Forester XT up so high in the list but it's true...its turbo and really tall gearing helped

I often wondered the same thing as to why the Australian ratings were always so much slower than those of the rest of the world. I think you may have answered my question. I don't speak for the magazines, of course, but I believe they test them like this:

-Driver only, no passengers (that's 100-200 lbs. right there)
-Automatics are brake torqued and manuals drop-clutched unless power is so great that it would smoke the tires. Basically whatever will get you off the line with a smidgen of wheel spin.
-Track is a level, smooth surface, probably in the morning hours.
-Our OEM tires may be less all season/terrain than yours, based on the number of dirt roads there.
-Tires and gas tank are probably at whatever state the test car happens to be in.

Even so, you get some big variances among the auto rags here. R&T has some really articulate writers and the polish of the articles is great, but their average age (I would guess) tends to lead to their slower times. MT used to be more consistent, but once Angus took over, I think they just give the best rating to whatever car he likes. I haven't really paid much attention to their numbers lately, but the conclusions of some of their articles are pretty slanted. And they don't proofread anything, so sometimes the 0-60 time is 3627 Lbs.

As for the faster times, it is tha same as basket ball players: Anstey "grew" 2 inches in height when he was drafted to the NBA.

Maybe it is just the way the photo is taken but the F6X doesn't look anything special or interesting.

Subaru Forester XT (old turbo): 5.3 sec
Toureg 2 (V8): 5.7 sec
Audi Q7 (V8): 5.8 sec
BMW X5 (V8): 5.7 sec
BMW X6 (V8): 5.3 sec
Infiniti FX45: 5.5 sec
Infiniti EX35 AWD: 5.6 sec
Cayenne GTS: 5.7 sec
Cayenne Turbo: 4.9 sec
Mercedes G55: 5.5 sec
Mercedes ML550: 5.6 sec
Mercedes ML63: 4.7 sec
Jeep Grand Cherokee (Hemi): 5.7 sec
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8: 4.7 sec
Lamborghini LM02: 4.5 sec

Most of the above are V8's, but the Territory has a turbo on its i6--and is tuned for that matter. Even so, the Infiniti EX35 has a V6 and beats it without forced induction. Even the old Forester is faster with the 2.5L turbo flat 4 cylinder in its light chassis. And let's not forget the hometown hero: the GMC Typhoon, which used its turbo 6 to get to 60mph in under 5 seconds almost 2 decades ago. Maybe this is supposed to be about top speed, but even then, the only way that would happen is if somehow all of the above vehicles used German-style 150mph limiters, which seems rather unlikely.
i thought that wasn't quick .. maybe the 0-100 figure isn't correct, coz it really sounds like it's got more potential than the 6-sec zone ?

Re: New FPV Territory F6X Turbo Released - The World's Fastest SUV!

Here is that list with the times to 100kph from Australias 2 leading Motoring Magazines
{Wheels**
(MOTOR)

Subaru Forester XT (old turbo): 5.3 sec {7.1** for the new Forrester
Toureg 2 (V8): 5.7 sec {6.7** For V10 TDI R50
Audi Q7 (V8): 5.8 sec {6.4 TDI and 7.1 petrol V8**
BMW X5 (V8): 5.7 sec {6.5**
Cayenne GTS: 5.7 sec {6.1 for M6 and 6.6 for A6**
Cayenne Turbo: 4.9 sec {5.1** (6.5)
Mercedes ML63: 4.7 sec {5.0** (5.3)
Jeep Grand Cherokee (Hemi): 5.7 sec {7.4**
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8: 4.7 sec (5.1)

Maybe if we took the F6X to NA we could get it in the 4s. There is quite the disparity between a few there (keeping in mind the MPH compared to the KPH ratings). Perhaps gearing/shift points etc are slightly tweaked to aid 0-96 then shift, creating a significant delay before carrying over to 100.

Two reasons:

1. 60 mph vs. 62 mph actually does make quite a difference. Take a car that does 0-60 in 6.0 sec, that's 0.1 sec per mph. However, the acceleration isn't constant, meaning it's less than 0.1 sec/mph at low speeds (1st gear) and more than 0.1 sec/mph at the top of 2nd gear. So that 6.0 sec turns into 6.3-6.4 sec.

2. US magazines use 'roll-out', which means they don't start the clock until the car has moved 12". This saves another 0.3-0.4 seconds.

So basically a car that does 0-62mph in 6.7 sec in the rest of the world would do 0-60mph in like 6.0 sec in US mags. For slower cars the differences are obviously bigger.
