Ford Possibly Testing New Twin-Turbo V6

Australian Car Advice
8 Febuary 2008
www.caradvice.com.au

After a recent outing in country Victoria, one of our photographers happened to have his equipment on him when he spotted what is believed to be Ford’s new twin-turbo V6 testing in a BF Falcon mule.

Although we can’t mention the car our photographer was in – as to keep their anonymity – it was a quick, V8 powered vehicle capable of getting to 100km/h from a standing start in around 5-seconds.

The photographer described how this mule was pulling away from them at full-throttle in second gear. The photographer also described the noise as being quite loud and certainly one of a turbocharged car, they mentioned that it sounded different to the inline-6 currently used in the Ford range. This hints at the new twin-turbo unit being tested in time for the 2010 cut-off of Ford’s inline-6 motor.

2008 Ford Orion Fairmont Ghia CGI

Australian Car Advice
8 Febuary 2008
www.caradvice.com.au

With Ford’s new model just weeks away from being released to the media, our automotive stylist has released their impression of the Orion Fairmont Ghia.

From what our spy photographers have captured so far, the Fairmont Ghia has been oriented toward a sporty feel, a boot lid spoiler and side-skirts have hinted at its new sporty future.

Ford is keen to take on Holden’s attempt with the Calais and Calais V, so we expect to see new features, such as front parking sensors, along with the carryover of technology such as the reversing camera from the Territory, along with auto-dimming rear vision mirror.

XR Models Delay New Falcon On-Sale Date

Joe Kenwright
10 January 2007
www.carpoint.com.au

Has Ford been forced into an 11th-hour redesign of its next XR models?

Although Ford Australia has never committed to an exact 2008 on-sale date for the new 'Orion' Falcon range, Carsales Network sources have confirmed that the projected first quarter onsale date had to be postponed after the XR sports models required a revamp.

Although a Melbourne motor show reveal for the new Falcon is still on schedule for February 29, the full Ford-badged range may not reach showrooms until April while the FPV range is now looking more certain for a May roll out.

The big issue according to our sources was the lack of differentiation and extra attitude of the new sporty XR models (XR6, XR6 Turbo, XR8) over other Falcon and Fairmont models in the new range.

Those who saw the proposed final new XR models -- among them Ford's most senior dealer personnel -- were shocked at the lack of excitement in the design presented.

2008 Ford Falcon ‘Orion’ Video

One of our loyal readers has sent through a video showcasing the 2008 Ford Falcon range.

According to Lloyd and his brother Des, the video and the photos below were taken at Katherine Gorge in the Northern Territory.

In the video we can see two Sedan and two Ute variants. Not surprisingly, Ford’s test drivers are not too keen to stick around when they see the video camera.

Only 56 more days remain till the 2008 Melbourne Motor Show where Ford is expected to officially show-off the new Falcon range. The 2008 Falcon will be one of the biggest unveils of the year.

2008 Ford Falcon Orion & FPV Orion Ute

Our spy photographer has been at it again, this time snapping Ford’s sibling utes and sedans in action, almost entirely revealing the headlight outline of the all-new Falcon models and XR variants, which will continue with Ford’s double tear drop treatment.

The photographs also reveal Ford’s separated cab arrangement on the utes, unlike Holden’s single side panel.

Firstly though, our automotive stylist has been hard at work piecing together parts of our spy photographs, with the ambition of revealing the final product. Here we have our artist’s impression of the Orion XT and the FPV variant of the Orion ute.

Falcon 'Work' Wagon A Carryover?

CarPoint Editor
13 December 2007
www.carpoint.com.au

A 'new' Falcon wagon remains on the agenda, but just how new will it be?

Ford has confirmed it will stay in the 'work' wagon market with the arrival of the new-generation Falcon.

Ford Australia president, Tom Gorman, confirmed his company's decision this week. Asked at his last media briefing for 2007 whether the Falcon wagon would survive after the arrival of the new Orion range, he surprised most observers by confirming the company would stay in the wagon market.

"Our plan is to continue to sell Falcons and we're evaluating what the future looks like for us."

"When we launched Territory in 2004 a lot of people thought that would substitute heavily for Falcon wagon and it just didn't work out that way."

"As we've understood that customer, 99.9 per cent of the sales are fleet sales and it is very much a tool of trade product. So it is about cost of ownership; it heavily skews towards E-Gas; so that market is still a very good market for us. We plan to remain competitive there for some time."

2008 Ford Falcon Countdown Begins

Richard Blackburn
12 December 2007
www.drive.com.au

The countdown to the all-new Ford Falcon, codenamed Orion, has begun ahead of the crucial new vehicle’s launch in 2008.

Ford will reveal engineering details of the new Falcon in February 2008, ahead of a May launch of its new model, codenamed Orion.

Wagon, ute and high performance versions of the car will follow between May and the end of June.

The new car will be 8th generation of Australia’s oldest surviving nameplate and arguably the most crucial in the company’s history in Australia.

Ford is counting on the new Falcon to reverse its flagging fortunes in the local large car market, where it has been on a dramatic slide in recent years.

The Ford Falcon has suffered more than most as Australian buyers have turned their back on large cars in favour of four-wheel-drives and small cars.

2008 Ford Falcon Orion Details

Australian Car Advice
12 December 2007
www.caradvice.com.au

Ford has started releasing their own spyshots as part of a publicity campaign leading up to the release of the all-new 8th generation Falcon in April-May next year.

The blue oval is scheduled to release specifications of the 2008 Falcon in February at the Melbourne Motor Show.

As it stands, the new Falcon sedan will launch in early May with the ute and FPV models to hit showrooms by the end of June (there are conflicting reports regarding the wagon).

The new Falcon is crucial to the survival of Ford’s Australian-manufacturing future. With plans to build the Ford Focus locally, the new Falcon must also do its part, and having invested well-over $110 million in the new Falcon so far, Ford is determined to get its way.

Ford's new Falcon gets caught fanging up the freeway.

Ford’s becoming less cautious about next year’s Falcon, codenamed Orion, being seen in public – although, obviously, the car’s still fairly heavily camouflaged.

The new Falcon will be launched at February’s Melbourne motor show, but here it is in convoy on Sydney’s F3 Freeway. The clip’s been sent to us by an avid Wheels reader. And, as a bonus, there’s a US muscle car up ahead … send us a comment if you can pick it...

No GTHO Until At Least 2009

Joe Kenwright

www.carpoint.com.au

FPV is committed to bringing back the 'HO', but the time must be right.

Rod Barrett is still on a mission to recreate the great Australian muscle car icon, the XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III. But Barrett, the 'Boss' at FPV, was adamant that he would not introduce a new GT-HO until he had the right hardware. He anticipated that this wouldn't be until well into 2009 at the earliest.

Barrett harbours a clearer idea of what the iconic model represents than most who have tried to revive the model in the past, and remains emphatic that the hallowed badge will not be applied to a pretender or an expedient marketing special.

"It will not be called Phase V", said Barrett, "but it will replicate the original's homologation race car status and very limited production."

March Launch For Orion A Furphy?

Joe Kenwright
9 October 2007
www.carpoint.com.au

Everybody is saying the new generation Falcon will be launched at Melbourne Motor Show... except Ford.

Sometimes it's not what people say, but rather what they don't… Although the automotive media is widely speculating that Ford's new Falcon range, codenamed Orion, will go on sale in March 2008 to coincide with the Melbourne International Motor Show, Ford has never commented on this position -- nor provided a clear indication of timing.

In the face of this stoicism, there is increasing evidence that the Blue Oval's new large car may not hit the showrooms until April or beyond.

Until this month, Ford looked like it was not doing enough for the runout of the current BF Mark II Falcon range. Although this seemed alarming to Ford dealers and fans alike, the timing of the latest round of more extensive runout models starts to make sense if the new model doesn't go on sale until later in 2008.

Ford has just announced the first easily discernible body changes for its XR sedans since 2002. It has also picked the perfect time to announce the Craig Lowndes limited edition XR ute (more here) with a second consecutive Bathurst win in the bag.

It wouldn’t be a Monday if we didn’t have the latest rumours from our Ford insider.

This week, our source has let loose details on the upcoming 2008 FPV Typhoon based on the all-new Falcon.

Hunting Orion

Neil McDonald
13 July 2007
www.news.com.au

The cover has been blown on the best-kept automotive secret of the year -- the 2008 Ford Falcon.

Heavily camouflaged photos of Ford's next Falcon, code-named Orion, might be popping up everywhere as the car nears its launch, but these photos reveal, for the first time, exactly what the newcomer looks like.

As the top-secret pictures show, the Ford Performance Vehicles division clearly has Holden Special Vehicles in its sights with these aggressively styled FPV sedans, the F6, GT and GT-P.

The FPV cars also give a strong indication of the overall styling direction for the bread-and-butter Falcons.

The look is sharper, more contemporary and significantly more refined than the almost 10-year old current design, which started life in the 1998 AU Falcon.

Orion will get a new body on proven mechanicals, meaning the existing six-cylinder and V8 engines will carry over with improved fuel economy. The suspensions, too, are expected to be retained, with improvements in ride and handling.

It's clear, though, the FPV cars are designed to shock.

Broady To Go Global

Marton Pettendy
17 July 2007
www.goauto.com.au

Ford to join Holden as a global rear-drive R&D house and in offering a twin-turbo V6.

As the Federal Labor Opposition today warned of a possible closure announcement of Ford’s Geelong engine plant as early as tomorrow (July 18), further details have emerged in the US of the all-new V6 – including a twin-turbocharged direct-injection version – that should eventually slot into the next-generation Falcon.

Opposition industry spokesman Kim Carr told Fairfax newspapers today that the Australian auto industry was “bracing itself for a decision, and we fear the worst”.

Meanwhile, across the Pacific respected US website Edmunds.com has revealed further details of the replacement V6, along with the BMW M3-style twin-clutch transmission it will be paired with (in the high-performance variant) and the lead engineering role Australia is believed to be playing in the Blue Oval’s future global rear-wheel drive platform architecture.

In return for part of the $137 million it received mostly in the form of Federal Government import duty concessions from the Automotive Competitiveness and Investments Scheme (ACIS) in 2006, Ford Australia has committed to developing a left-hand drive version of its reskinned 2008 Orion Falcon for sale in potential export markets.

Now, precisely 12 months after GM Holden launched the VE Commodore sedan as the first model to ride on GM’s new global rear-drive “architecture”, Edmunds has reported that the first of a procession of US and possibly European models to employ all-new vehicle underpinnings designed by Ford Australia for its next-generation Falcon (not due before 2013) will appear globally inside four years.

In a worldwide future model engineering strategy that appears to be a carbon copy of what Holden and GM began with the Commodore’s Zeta foundations, it is believed Ford US will launch the first in a family of large rear-drive coupe and sedan models in 2011 for the 2012 model year – around two-years ahead of Ford Australia’s all-new next-generation Falcon.

Scoop: 2008 Falcon Caught On Video

Chris Gable
18 June 2007
www.wheelsmag.com.au

Watch our exclusive footage of Ford's all-important new Falcon in action, caught during dust-seal testing. The car, codenamed Orion, will be launched at next year's Melbourne motor show.

The identity of the car is as obvious as the location. Caught in this exclusive video, probably during dust-seal testing behind the high-speed bowl at Ford’s You Yangs Proving Ground is … the much-anticipated, hugely-important new Falcon, code-named Orion.

Sent to Wheels by a faithful reader, the video clearly shows two fairly lightly-disguised Orions. The blue car may even be a V8…

Apart from the side cladding, fake C-pillars and front and rear “bras”, we believe these are the clearest video images yet seen of the new Falcon, due to be unveiled at next year’s Melbourne motor show.

And, we don’t mind saying that the obviously shorter overhangs and dynamic profile look good to us.

This is a car Ford Australia needs badly. Despite a kick in the large car market last month, Falcon sales continued to slide, while sales of its rival Holden Commodore and Toyota Aurion strengthened. In fact, Falcon sales were down last month by a whopping 24.3 percent compared to last May.

Yes, Ford needs the new Falcon badly.

The new Falcon may even become more significant for Ford Australia, with recent strong speculation that the Australian-designed platform on which its built is being considered as the basis for Ford’s next generation of rear-wheel-drive cars for the vast US and Canadian markets.

Diesel Falcon & Territory A Step Closer

Ian Porter
26 July 2007
www.drive.com.au

Ford Australia says its new engine strategy for 2010 onwards includes targeting diesel power for its locally built large car and SUV.

Ford Australia will soon be in the position to offer economical diesel engines across its passenger vehicle range, including the three models it will be making in Australia after 2010.

The company is planning to ride the wave of popularity which has seen diesel cars take more than 50 per cent of all passenger vehicle sales in Europe, Ford president Tom Gorman said yesterday.

The decision announced last week to stop making the Falcon inline six-cylinder engine at Geelong in 2010 and replace it with imported engines will open the possibility of the Falcon and the Territory to have diesel engines after that date.

"Part of our V6 strategy is we want to get diesel engines into our core domestic products," Mr Gorman told the Australian British Chamber of Commerce.

"Diesel, with its lower CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions, has been used extensively by European manufacturers to address the very real challenges of climate change," Mr Gorman said.

Falcon R6 Alert!

James Stanford
13 June 2007
www.goauto.com.au

Ford Australia has registered the name Falcon R6.

The trademark protection for the title, lodged last week, is the latest indication Ford plans to introduce new model variants in its next-generation Falcon range – codenamed Orion – which is due for release around April next year.

The company also registered the names Falcon G6 and Falcon G6E in March.

There is no guarantee the names will be used, as companies sometimes trademark titles that never make it to market, but the new models do fit in with Ford Australia’s plans to expand the Falcon range with the Orion model.

Ford Australia president Tom Gorman told GoAuto last month the company was planning to make some changes to the model range for Orion.

“The series will look different, I will put it that way,” Mr Gorman said. “There is an opportunity for us to position ourselves a bit differently and really go where the opportunity lies.”

Ford Australia is expected to place more of an emphasis on luxury models with the Orion range.

It is well aware the more expensive and better-equipped models in the VE Commodore range are selling more strongly than expected.

Ford Visit Strengthens Falcon Export Rumours

Bruce Newton
8 June 2007
www.drive.com.au

Rumours the Falcon could have global appeal are gathering pace with the imminent arrival of Ford's global product boss.

A Ford executive with a key role in determining the long-term future of the Falcon will pay his first-ever visit to the company's Australian product development facilities next week.

His Australian visit has strengthened rumours that Ford Australia could export Falcons to key markets or supply technical know-how with large, rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

Derrick Kuzak is Ford Motor Company’s global product development chief, a role he has fulfilled for only seven months.

Reporting directly to Ford's global president and CEO Alan Mullaly, his task is to integrate the company’s vehicle design and engineering process.

During a two-day visit, Kuzak will tour Ford’s Melbourne and Geelong design and engineering facilities as well as the nearby You Yangs proving ground.

He will also sample a range of vehicles including the 2008 Falcon, codenamed Orion, which is due to be unveiled next March.

“Derrick is very important to Ford globally and Ford Australia and he will be given a thorough briefing regarding our facilities and products,” confirmed Ford Australia's public affairs manager, Sinead McAlary.

In essence, Kuzak is sorting out which arms of the global automotive giant will play what role in developing which vehicles.

Why Ford's New Falcon Must Fly

Joshua Dowling
6 July 2007
www.drive.com.au

Joshua Dowling previews the next generation of the most important sedan in the company's history.

Ford has a lot riding on the new Falcon, due next March. It's more than a new car, it's the vehicle that underpins Ford Australia's local manufacturing operations.

Last year, sales of the Falcon fell to their lowest in more than 40 years; this year sales continue to struggle. When the Falcon finished the 2006 sales race in third place, behind the Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla, it was the first time in the 46-year history of the nameplate that it had not finished in one of the top two places. This year is shaping up as badly.

There are several reasons why the Falcon is struggling. It is a victim of the steady decline in sales of large cars over the past decade (as buyers, empowered by more choice, embrace more prestigious or more fuel-efficient vehicles) and it is now the oldest model among its locally made peers. An all-new Holden Commodore was released last August, Toyota's Aurion V6 arrived last October and the Mitsubishi 380 is only in its second full year on sale.

Age alone is not necessarily an issue, it's the fact that newer models often are equipped with newer technology that makes them safer, more fuel-efficient or more appealing.

The current Falcon has been around since September 2002. Although it has undergone a few minor revisions over the past 41/2 years much of its underpinnings actually date back to the September 1998 AU Falcon model. In other words, parts of the Falcon will be nine years old when the updated model arrives next March.

2008 Ford Falcon Ute & XR6 Turbo Sprung!

Australian Car Advice
8 June 2007
www.caradvice.com.au

Unlike Holden, Ford seems to be preparing their Falcon Utility to coincide with the release of their new model - codename Orion.

Our spy photographer has sprung the Falcon Ute during testing in an undisclosed location in Victoria’s bushy countryside. Although the photos aren’t quite crystal clear, there is an obvious indication that body size will remain similar to Ford’s currently successful utility range.

The model photographed seems to be a base model with tray attached. It’s also nice to see the Ute decked out with a big set of alloy wheels which - I would think - probably won’t be seen on the ready model.

Whilst waiting for the Ford Falcon Ute to come past, our sleuth photographer snapped off a few shots of a car we have seen before.

This time around, the car was much closer, revealing some more information about the vehicle’s shape and contours. The front end reveals new sculpting for the fog lights and also some humps on the bonnet…we’ll leave that to your imagination.

2008 Falcon Caught Testing

Barry Park
6 June 2007
www.drive.com.au

As our spy photos show, the latest Falcon will look all new, but there will be lots of familiar hardware beneath the skin.

Ford's make-or-break Falcon has been caught during secret testing in the outback.

The next generation Falcon family car has been sprung in a petrol station in Coober Pedy ahead of its launch around March 2008.

Drive reader David Williamson has captured the first images of what appear to be a sporty XR6 and a base-model Falcon (rumours suggest the entry-level Falcon could adopt a new name when the heavily-revised model arrives in dealerships).

‘‘I saw them filling up with petrol at a service station in Coober Pedy and the three people in one of the cars saw me taking photos and claimed they were a Magna or Aurion,’’ Mr Williamson says.

The new Falcon, codenamed Orion, will replace the current model BF Falcon from about March 2008.

Ford 'Orion' Caught!

CarPoint Editor
5 May 2007
www.carpoint.com.au

Ford's new Falcon has been spied in the open.

The first real shots of Ford's next generation Falcon have been captured and published on Australian website CarAdvice.com.au.

The cars, a XR sports model and what appears to be a standard Falcon, were captured yesterday on roads near Ford's You Yangs (Vic) proving ground by one of the website's readers.

CarAdvice says the drivers prevented the observer from getting front-on shots of the heavily disguised cars. It published rear and rear three-quarter shots of the cars, which were also picked up by US site autoblog.com.

At first glance the cars seem to have retained the current model's rounded roof -- at least in profile. However, it could be that Ford has cleverly aped the AU/BF's shape to disguise the true look of the car.

That said, the cars appear to carry their width higher than the current model and thus may offer more shoulder room. There's certainly more mass to the car from the rear three-quarter view.

Though little else is clear from the shots, what is obvious is the heavily-raked shoulder line of the new car. The window line rises sharply from below the external rear-view mirrors in a line reminiscent of the new Mondeo, but as it appears the car does not have the strong character line of the European sedan.

Boot space stands to be huge given the sharply rising side elevation of the car.

New innovation: anti-intrusion bars welded on the outside of the doors....

(Not really - just winding up F&H!)

Definitely got a sloping wedge shape to it, despite the lumps'n'bumps camo. That looks wider across than BF at the C-pillar. Could be the wedge misleading the eye, through.

As I queried in the other post: Does the single exhaust on a sports model, indicate that the fuel cell has not been moved forward of the rear axle as required by US standards? Will Ford Aus, again opt out of developing an exportable LHD RWD car, virtually stunting any hopes of Ford Falcon carrying on into the future? Lots of assumptions but still a valid query IMO.

This provides good evacuation of spent gasses and maximum potential for unfoulled and better-mixed incoming mixture - sort of like prunes in a sixty-year-old!

On a v-config motor this is harder to plumb, so they tend to have separate primaries per bank. You go to dual pipes for flow through the mufflers mainly.

Plus, I've heard several Nismo twin-secondary systems on naturally aspirated straight sixes including XR6s. It isn't an inspiring sound. The even firing order makes it just sound a bit like a FB Holden with a holed resonator. As the Falcon six has quite a handsome deep roar through a single pipe, I don't think they'd want to chance woosifying it.
I should have read the other thread first. Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: 2008 Ford Falcon 'Orion' Spyshots

It actually almost looks like the current falcon apart from the rear a LITTLE bit :s
I think it might be a current falcon body on the Orions platform for extra secrecy.

Nowhere near as sharp as I would have hoped for either.

(Not really - just winding up F&H!)

Definitely got a sloping wedge shape to it, despite the lumps'n'bumps camo. That looks wider across than BF at the C-pillar. Could be the wedge misleading the eye, through.

lol, nice try! I'm concerned it looks to VE...

I'm curious...how can you tell, it has camo all over the car, very good camo if you ask me...
It's the real Orion body, but too early to see any detail to make an assumption on average or attractive styling.

You honestly didn't know the BA had the fuel tank located ahead of the rear axle!?

well, its obviously not 'sharp', and the spoiler looks similar, and the tail light seem to slant the same way as BA/BF

Again, how can you tell 'obviously'? it has CAMO all over the car, camo is used to trick the untrained eye.
Too many people make judgements on cars with camo these days, like they can see what nobody else can!
