Holden's S3X To Be Known As 'Captiva'
Holden's S3X To Be Known As 'Captiva'
Paul Gover 28 February 2006 www.carsguide.com.au The newest member of the GM Holden family finally has a name. It is Captiva. It is the name that will be used for the production model of the four-wheel drive that has, until now, been known as the S3X concept. The S3X has been doing the motor show tour in Australia since Sydney last year and will be displayed again on the GM Holden stand at the Brisbane Motor Show, which opens to the public on Friday afternoon. The Captiva is a mid-sized machine with a 3.2-litre Holden V6 and will join the local line-up in the second half of the year. The name was only confirmed today following a global presentation at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland, where General Motors revealed that Captiva badges would also be applied to the vehicle for sales in Europe through its growing Chevrolet dealer network. Details of the Captiva are still a little sketchy, but GM Holden has confirmed that it will be available as either a five or seven-seater with an 'active' four-wheel drive system which feeds on-demand drive to the back wheels. The chairman of GM Holden, Denny Mooney, has also highlighted the Australian input into the Captiva project. "The extensive Australian input in Captiva covers the outside, inside and underneath to ensure it looks, feels and drives as a Holden should," Mooney says. But there is much more to Captiva, as it finally gives Holden a weapon to combat the Ford Territory and go after Toyota, which dominates the four-wheel drive landscape with everything from the compact RAV4 through the Prado and Kluger to the hulking LandCruiser. "This vehicle has been a missing link in our product lineup and we believe there is strong appetite for its arrival," Mooney says. Holden Captiva - The New SUV To Captivate Australia GM Media 28 February 2006 www.media.gm.com Holden’s new sports utility vehicle will be called Captiva and powered by an advanced new 3.2-litre Global V6 all-alloy engine made in Port Melbourne. Holden today released the name and first images of the new production car to coincide with Captiva’s global debut at the Geneva Motor Show. GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Denny Mooney, today said Captiva would be available with five or seven seats, electronic stability program (ESP) and an active all-wheel-drive system. Mr Mooney said Captiva would be in Holden showrooms in the second half of 2006. The start of sales date, model line-up and further technical specifications will be released closer to launch. “Captiva is a striking design with flexible seating and extremely competitive equipment levels,” Mr Mooney said. “The production car remains very close to the S3X concept which has impressed motorshow crowds in Australia in the past few months. “The extensive Australian input in Captiva covers the outside, inside and underneath to ensure it looks, feels and drives as a Holden should. This vehicle has been a missing link in our product line-up and we believe there is strong appetite for its arrival. “Captiva is Holden’s strongest move yet into the sports utility vehicle market and it will represent great value and high specification.” Holden Captiva will measure 4.635m long, 1.850m wide and 1.720m high, offering spacious seating for five or a third row to fit seven people. High quality materials will provide an impressive fit and finish to complement its sophisticated and bold exterior design. Captiva has a strong Australian influence, with former GM Holden-based designers Mike Simcoe and Max Wolff involved in the car’s design team. GM Holden engineers extensively tested Captiva around Australia and at GM Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground, ensuring top class ride and handling for local conditions. Captiva’s active all-wheel-drive system instantly employs the rear axle, as driving conditions dictate, via an electronically controlled electro-magnetic coupling to provide maximum traction. This system also works seamlessly with ESP and ABS, enhancing driver control. ![]() Last edited by JoeT : 02-28-2006 at 01:29 AM. |

Re: Holden's S3X To Be Known As 'Captiva'
It will be interesting to check out the packaging this weekend up here in Brizvegas. I'm 6'5" so I'll be as good a test as any to check out interior size. My partner likes them but I still cant see the need. We are close to Noosa and double island point so sand would be the only reason it would leave the tarmac. It will have to be pretty impressive to sway me from a Commodore wagon.

Re: Holden's S3X To Be Known As 'Captiva'
Well it makes sense I guess. What is the Captiva replacing in Holden's lineup? The Frontera? Or is that just a Euro-badge?
If the Frontera badge did exist down under and was 'damaged' then I guess the move to the Captiva name was a good move.

It looks so good. Reminds me of the older RAV4.

I like the front end, but don't like anything past the B-Pillar. I don't like the swoosh down, I like them more square and straight, and don't care much for the Vibe/Matrix backside. Isn't this theta so it should have better crash tests than the other GM-DAT offerings, specifically the Aveo?

Re: Holden's S3X To Be Known As 'Captiva'
I like the name... it's Captiva-ating. I'm with those that thing the front is strong but the rear is kinda week. From the very back it has a cute-ish Matiz feel, unfortunately. Overall it's nice, just not as sharp as I'd originally hoped. Still, I suspect it's the right vehicle at the right time... it's not a gas-hog or too large.

I agree! Frontera was a great name, and a great car - not that the Captiva stands up to what Frontera was, but I don't see any reason for recycling the name rather than Captiva/Antara.This vehicle is fat, even though GM DAT coloured the "pregnant" part black to make it more easy on the eyes. It says "I'm not off-road at all" from every angle. |
