Holden turns up the heat in SUVs: New Captiva 2.4L 5-seater to take on CRV and RAV

Captiva 5 To Join Popular SUV Range

Quote:
Holden will add a new Captiva five-seater to its popular SUV range later this year.
Captiva 5 will offer an alternative for motorists that want the value, flexibility and safety features of the Captiva 7 range but as a five-seater.
Captiva 5 will be powered by a 2.4 litre four cylinder engine and will compete directly against Toyota Rav4, Nissan X-Trail and Honda CRV.
Available as a 2WD with manual transmission or an AWD with automatic transmission, both models boast a competitive feature list including:

 Driver and front passenger airbags
 Side curtain airbags
 Electronic Stability Control
 Traction Control
 17” alloy wheels
 Air conditioning
 6 Disc CD player
 Cloth seat trim
 Leather wrap steering wheel
 Cruise control
 Front and Rear Park Assist

Holden Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, John Elsworth, said the introduction of the Captiva 5 meant Holden would better compete in the Compact SUV and Medium SUV segments.
“Captiva 5 is a compact SUV that will attract a different set of buyers than those who require the seven-seater,” Mr Elsworth said.
“It is sure to appeal to couples and families with its attractive European styling, well specified equipment level and competitive price point.”

The Captiva seven-seater range will continue with the SX, CX and LX models.
Holden Captiva is one of Australia's favourite mid-size SUVs, outselling the Ford Territory with 6,998 vehicles sold year to date, accounting for 15.1 per cent of the competitive medium SUV market.
Captiva 5 will go on sale in early December with the following recommended retail prices:

 Captiva 5 2WD (manual) $27,990
 Captiva 5 AWD (automatic) $30,990
That pricing is extremely competitive - it's going to give Honda and Toyota a nosebleed.

I'm interested in the 2.4 - I wonder if this is going in a new Epica and possibly the Cruze?

Is the AWD only available as an auto. If so why would that be?

I think they're just closely matching the most common config of the competing vehicles. Given this is obviously a 'budget SUV' proposition a 5-speed 2WD manual is the poverty pack.

May I ask please?

Where does the 2.4 Litre engine derive from? Is it a new clean sheet or from an existing family of engines?

Is it really European styling? Was a product built in Korea by GM-DAT (which is overseen by Holden especially as far as styling is concerned) actually styled in Europe, or only really in a European style? I know the now-discontinued-in-Oz Maxx model was the same as the similar Opel special version; that one I might believe Opel did but the "ordinary" one?

Mike
I would bet alot of money--its the direct injection 2.4L Ecotec.

Be a good "little" cross over SUV for NA.

Equinox was always alot bigger then others.

Styling was originally based on the S2X concept shown at Frankfurt some time ago so it has Opel influence. I tend to agree, though - more Aussie styling like the Ford version of their overseas concepts, but definitely more Euro-ish than the uglified old Winsdstrom/Vue styling.

I'm hoping the 2.4 might be the DI motor and it might end up in our Cruze's - that's a nice bit of kit. I suspect though, Holden might have made a bit more of a song/dance about it in the press release if it is coming, and we might just have the MPI version of that motor.

Seeing as the 2.4 DI is in some other GM product and they're supposed to standardise, here's hoping.

Edit: I asked the queston of the offiical Holden media rep., and the nice lady said, more details closer to launch. I'll tried to finagle an invite to that.

Well this has me interested, i have zero use for a 7 seater but a 5 seater is appealing.

A surprise inclusion. I'll be most interested in the power plant as well. Another little green badge for Holden's line up?

This 2.4 litre model has always been around: it has been used in overseas models since 2006.

It would be cool if we could get a manual in the Equinox/Terrain, but I'm sure the take rate would be in the 1% area since they really aren't sporty vehicles.

Thats extremely competitive pricing, dont really get why AWD is only available on Auto and 2WD with manual.

Is it the US 2.4l? That has around 126kw from memory. I don't think it's anything outstanding if it is that engine.

So is this the same Captiva body just with less seats and a smaller engine, or is a smaller vehicle altogether?

If it is the same vehicle with less power, the press are sure to bag it in roadtests.

Re: Holden turns up the heat in SUVs: New Captiva 2.4L 5-seater to take on CRV and RA

I've got a bad feeling about this. the 2.4 D-TEC (Family II related) engine in the Euro-spec Chevrolet Captiva and Korea-spec Daewoo Winstorm puts out 100kW and 220Nm and has to lug around 1770kg! The RAV4's figures are 125kW/224Nm/1585kg and the CRV's are 125kW/218Nm/1600kg. It doesn't bode well for the Captiva's performance or economy.

The other alternative is the US Equinox's 2.4 SIDI unit that pumps out 136kW and 229Nm. This is a much more useful looking power figure. Unfortunately, this engine isn't used anywhere in the world in the Captiva. Hopefully it will be part of a major upgrade (worldwide) that includes the new 3.0 SIDI V6 unit as well. A Cruze influenced interior update would be nice too

No it's a Holden version of the Family II engine made in Port Melbourne, Australia. The outputs look frightening: 100 kW (134 hp) and 220 Nm (162 foot pounds).

0-100 km/h in 11.5 seconds

Everything else is the same, only the smaller engine and two fewer seats differ.
