Holden Owner Upgrades After 22 Years, 869,000 Miles

"Rodney Boyle of Queensland, Australia had been driving his 1984 Holden Gemini diesel for 22 years, during which he has amassed a staggering 1.4 million kilometers (869,000+ miles) on the odometer. In addition to being reliable -- the car saw very few major repairs in its lifetime of service -- the old Gemini averaged around 54 miles per gallon for him. "

I always wonder why GM import those diesel engine to the states. Maybe it has to do with the oil companies, maybe it has to do with the dealerships with lost repair cash flows coming in, maybe it has to do with the Bush adminstration war on terrorism. Whatever the case, bring those diesel stateside.

A 1984 petrol Nissan Bluebird puts out about 10 times the content CO2 pollution compared to that of a modern day 4.0l Prado. This is why I hated diesel engines. (modern ones are, of course, much better)

As for driving a gemini for 22 years, this guy deserves a medal for bravery.

How did Bush get into this picture... the car is a 1980 somthing... before Bush and his administration came into the picture... but, more options for the car segment and diesel engines would be great for today's market... especially if it would get the 50+ mpg...

More options is the American way... why not follow it?!

Geez, for the good publicity it brings in, Vauxhall oughta give the guy the new Astra in trade.

Steady!!!!

I drove a Gemini knocker for 15 years - body cancer got it in the end. Mechanically, the only trouble was the seal on the extended alternator shaft - it use to lose its tension and oil from the vacuum pump would end up inside the alternator causing grief!!!

I got 256K Km out of her. She was the supreme slug!!

GM should tout this locally in the Austrailian market as to the quality and reliability of their vehicles. More examples of this on high volume US cars should also be mentioned regionally here in the US market though, attesting to the quality of their recent/current offerings. Its better than showing how much lower a lease rate you can get on a aveo - impala, etc. imho.

That's a long way for a car like that to last. Awesome mileage too...
