Get this!

V8, turbo on track for ‘Green Challenge’ glory
Toby Hagon
The Age

Forget hybrid cars and electric vehicles; two of Australia’s fastest, thirstiest cars are on target to win a controversial 3000km economy run from Darwin to Adelaide.

The two thirstiest, most powerful cars in the field are on track to win the Global Green Challenge, an environmentally focussed fuel economy run from Darwin to Adelaide.

Two of the fastest cars ever produced in Australia – the HSV Maloo R8 and Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo – are first and second in the 14-car “Eco Challenge” field.

A 317kw V8 petrol ute is getting fuel economy figures of 5.34L/100k! 64% better that the claimed economy figures of 15.1L/100k.

The Ford Fiesta ECOnotec, a vehicle thats primary function is as a fuel sipper is getting figures of 3.2L/100k. Just 2.14L less per 100k!

Amazing.

Reckon it sounds better to say the sticker figure is 183% higher than it's actually achieving!

Hi Mike

We had a leisurely day in the Cruze today and achieved 5l/100kms at an average speed of 85km. We have two drivers in the car and all of the luggage for all four team members.

At the beginning of the day, when we had been running at around 70kmh for a couple of hours, we had the trip reading 4.3.

Organisers and teams have agreed to some changes to recalibrate the figures for the Eco Challenge cars as the original numbers have been based on individual car ODOs and they all read differently... This gave us a result of 6.38 for yesterday.

We now fuel in the morning so won't know today's figures until tomorrow afternoon.

BTW - we have loaned the Annesley College team an SS Sportwagon with AFM V8 and they achieved fuel figures of 8.8l/100km (car fully loaded with passengers and gear). I guess they would have been running about 70kmh as they follow the Viva for the entire drive.

Tomorrow's drive - Coober Pedy to Port Augusta...

That's a long Haul! Watch for tumbleweeds. Pretty impressive result from the SS too!

Thank you Andrea for that data.

The SS Sportswagon for Annesley - its all up weight would be fairly considerable - may be an eye-opener to put the fully loaded vehicle on a Public Weighbridge to see its Gross Weight.

Similarly for the Cruze Diesel so that Holden can emphasise that these figures, while being achieved in certain average speed conditions, are being achieved in vehicles carrying realistic loads that the average Holden car owner would expect to carry on a day-by-day basis.

Again Andrea, thanks for your daily 'insights' - it is certainly appreciated by me.

I've run the SSV ute from Adeleaide to Melbourne (and back, of course) a couple of times and it returns 9.5l/100kms at highway speeds, hard overtaking, and aircon on. If I take the scenic route (ie Great Ocean Road) I get 10.5l/100kms.

Must be something to do with 1600 rpm for 100 kmh.

Mines auto, so it runs on 4 cylinders when things are in its favour, which isn't ofteh on the GOR.

Re: Holden & HSV Tackle The 2009 Global Green Challenge: Exclusive Daily Holden Updat

From the Internet,

http://www.australia.to/index.php?op...22:motor-sport

HOLDEN SPORTWAGON DELIVERS REMARKABLE FUEL ECONOMY

Commodore records lowest fuel economy of any Aussie-made six cylinder car

The Holden Commodore has returned the best fuel economy of any standard Australian-built entrant in a gruelling 3000 kilometre drive from Darwin to Adelaide.

The 6.48 litres/100 kilometre average achieved by Australia’s best selling car is equivalent to driving 1100 kilometres on a single tank.

The standard Omega Sportwagon, with its all new 3.0L S.I.D.I (Direct Injection) engine and six-speed transmission was 30.33% better than its official ADR81/02 combined test score of 9.3l/100km.

Commodore’s 6.48 litre/100 kilometre result compares to the Ford Falcon with 7.04 litre/100 kilometres and the Holden Maloo Ute which recorded 7.74 litres/100 kilometres.

“Over 3000km of driving have demonstrated the improvements we’ve made to the latest direct injection model Commodore,” Holden Vehicle Performance Manager Scott Heywood said.

“This is a standard large, six cylinder family car that can deliver fuel economy better than some four cylinder cars.

“We did the maths before the event but it’s one thing to do it on the back of an envelope and another thing to do it on the desert highway from Darwin to Adelaide. We’re absolutely delighted in the performance of the car and our team.”

In the development of the new S.I.D.I engine technology, Holden set out to improve the fuel efficiency of Australia’s best selling car. As a result, the new Commodore offers a 13% improvement over the previous six cylinder engine. (Based on ADR81/02 combined testing).

Mr Heywood said the Global Green Challenge event was a great experience and he offered encouragement for the Holden-sponsored, Annesley College (Adelaide) team which converted a standard Holden Viva to a petrol-electric hybrid.

“The Annesley College performance shows the ingenuity and determination of local students and teachers and demonstrates potential for the future development of passenger vehicles and the next generation of engineers.”

A team of four Holden employees took part in the Global Green Challenge, a biennial showcase of low emission and alternative vehicles.
