Holden & HSV Tackle The 2009 Global Green Challenge: Exclusive Daily Holden Updates!

3.0 SIDI Holden Sportwagon & HSV Maloo R8 To Tackle The 2009 Global Green Challenge

David Bottin

GMInsidenews

Holden and HSV head to the desert to show off their fuel efficient products.

Starting tomorrow (Saturday) vehicles from across the globe will set out on a week long, 3000km journey from Darwin to Adelaide as part of the 10th Global Green Challenge (formally the World Solar Challenge), showcasing the latest advances in alternative energy vehicles, including hybrid, electric, solar and low emission drivetrains.

The 3.0 V6 Holden Sportwagon, with an official 9.3 litres per 100km's ADR fuel rating, will demostrate Holden's latest fuel efficient SIDI direct injection technology. A Holden Cruze Diesel will act as a support vehicle.

HSV will also come along for the drive in a new E2 R8 Maloo. The high performance ute comes with an official ADR 15.1 litres per 100km's sticker. A specially equipped HSV Senator with a dual fuel (Petrol/LPG) engine will travel with their support crew as part of HSV Liquid Petroleum Injection (LPi) program.

Managing Director of HSV Phil Harding said the team were looking forward to demonstrating the ‘real world’ fuel economy of the iconic brand.

“We know our vehicles’ fuel economy on the road is much better than the Australian Design Rule (ADR) figures might indicate,” Phil Harding said.

“I have customers regularly talking about how fuel efficient their HSV is – now is our chance to demonstrate this point with our all new E Series 2 Maloo entry.”

To win the Global Green Challenge a vehicle must be able to demonstrate the greatest improvement in fuel economy compared to the official ADR figure.

GMInsidenews will keep you updated over the next week with all the latest Holden & HSV Global Green Challenge news.

Re: 3.0 SIDI Holden Sportwagon & HSV Maloo R8 To Tackle The 2009 Global Green Challen

Hi, Andrea from the Holden Global Green Challenge team here.

Darwin sure is hot and humid...

We've taken the Sportwagon out this morning to test our urban driving (mine in particular)! and my co-drivers are out on the road at the moment giving it a run up the highway.

Internet access permitting, we'll try and keep GMI updated with our progress.

Keep an eye out as well for the Annesley College girls school entry. We have donated a Holden Viva to the team and they've converted it to run as a petrol electric hybrid.

Hmmm... I can understand taking the 3.0 SIDI but I don't know about taking along a huge 6.2 litre V8 ute to a "Green Challenge"?!

Hey Andrea, it sure would be warm and sticky compared to 'the Old Dart'!

How come you drew the short straw and had to go! I'm sure Scott would have been a better candidate, especially with his gammy leg!

Best wishes - watch out for Drop Bears under the few trees you're likely to see!!

It's not the Drop Bears you have to worry about, its the "Black Feathers in your tummy" after a night on Swan Lager!!!!!!!!!!!!

And there are NIX points for being the best driver of the "Royal Doulton" or best "Technicolor Yawn"

Hah - Scott is the back up for when our phones are out of range.

Being a recent import to Australia I've never driven these kinds of distances - it will be quite the road trip.

Have an enjoyable and safe trip

A Viva? The poor girls, what did they ever do to you?

Well given the intent is to get the greatest improvement over the ADR numbers, a V8 isn't all that bad of an idea. Long straight probably very flat highway drivings = good returns for a v8. Also, the air conditioning wont kill the numbers so much

Good luck Andrea. Don't forget, if you run over a snake they can stay under the car until you stop moving. Best to jump clear just in case.

Hi Andrea, the best way to get great fuel econ on a run like yours is to get flat to the boards, go as fast as you can and then put it in neutral and roll the rest of the way.
It is all down hill isn't it

Great to see you on here giving us some info on this event

The HSV can get surprising fuel economy. Over here we have the AA Energywise rally every 2 years. HSV put in Maloo. Claimed Fuel economy was 15.7. After 3 days it had a achieved an amazing 9.497 L/100kms!! Thats over 1626kms, Auckland - Wellington and back. And yes thats better than Toyota's Camry claimed fuel usage. I believe the HSV will get outstanding economy as it did over here, cant wait for the final results!
