Re: Holden Coupe 60: The Last Pontiac GTO

Canuck, there is a mistake there.
Oldsmobile's death didn't have anything to do with the Zeta issue.
The announcement came in december of 2000.
The last intrigue was in 2002. the rest were done by 2004.

Loved that car...side exhausts,dot-r competition semi-slicks,carbon fiber seats with harness slots...what could have been.

Re: Holden Coupe 60: The Last Pontiac GTO

That article pisses me off. When I was in school in 2006 I could barely afford my Ford Focus. Now, out of school and teaching, I can afford nearly any car I want.

I think the article is snobbish. If the Coupe 60 was brought here my cash was in hand. I hate the fact I have to spend $40,000 to get a RWD 6-speed manual transmission car. I have no interest in Dodge and Ford is too chicken **** to make a RWD car that allows me to row my own gears.

I guess I'll wait for a used GXP 6-speed. My GTO is a ton of fun. It's relatively cheap and the best part, only $30 more to insure for six months than a Ford Focus SVT.

Re: Holden Coupe 60: The Last Pontiac GTO

It's almost enough to make a red-blooded American cry you know? All we can get is rice-inspired cars with no soul, cramped conditions for most men... what choices do we have for a car with STYLE? Few, and fewer still on the horizon. When people talk with anticipation about the Chevy Cruze?

Somewhere along the line the Baseball got jacked up on 'roids, the Chevy got outsourced from Chevrolet, and the Apple Pie was a frozen dietary nightmare warmed up in a microwave. I mourn for the passing of the great giants and titans upon who's shoulders I would have stood; may my children see brighter days than these...

As an extremist hater of cars not American, I have to say I have been admiring Australian cars for a while now. You guys seem to be keeping the spirit of 60s and 70s muscle alive. Don’t make the same mistake we did; do not allow regulation that will keep you from producing those large V8 beasts. And maybe, just maybe, we Americans would be honored enough to be given some of your muscle cars as imports or domestically-produced Aussie cars.

Which is why we should get our RWD V8's while we can. I took the plunge and got a G8 GT at a fire-sale price not just because it was a good deal, but because I believe that in a few more years, we may not be able to get RWD V8 cars at all unless you're willing to spend $40k on one.

Re: Holden Coupe 60: The Last Pontiac GTO

The article is factually incorrect in a number of ways: before introduction, Monaro was supposed to die after 2004 when the last V-car model VY did; and was always going to because the plant to build it was going away in 2005The VZ was a stopgap model (VE was supposed to be a 2005 model but delayed by a year). The HFV6, 6.0 L76 and LS2 were intended for introduction in VE.

That was by intent and design prior to Lutz' GTO decision in 2002. The GTO meant the VZ Monaro (2004-2005),was the second-most numerous model @1600 examples + 400 HSV LS2 Z-series Coupes, although it was never intended to be built prior to 2001 when the first Monaros rolled off the line.

Ladies and gents, this should be our Chevrolet Chevelle and with some sheetmetal changes, it should be the Buick Riviera. I may lean closer to the Buick side only because it can demand a high price tag and it certainly will be that halo vehicle that can add to that performance department that Pontiac left void. Besides, if Buick does decide to build the Riviera, it adds another platform into there stable of just FWD luxury Malibus

Welcome to GMI pellz. I'm sure there are plenty that agree with you when it comes to full size coupes. I for one spent a recent lunch break, staring at a s class Mercedes Coupe. It was unbelievably beautiful (wish I had my camera at the time!) and I think there is opportunity now to get more coupes back on the road, making them the next big thing (again). I would love a nice big touring coupe.

There was a actually a case to rebadge Holdens as Oldsmobiles in the '90s. There was an article in Hemmings Musclecar News a few years back that interviewed one of the higher ups of Olds at the time. He pushed to move Olds to RWD by the late '90s and early '00s, but GM beancounters refused. Can you imagine if there had been a renewed 442?
