GM's New 4.5L V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel: Will The Holden Commodore Get It?

GM 4.5L V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel Details

Australian Car Advice
6 May 2008
www.caradvice.com.au

General Motors has released official details on its new 4.5L V8 Duramax turbo-diesel engine which could feature in the Holden Commodore line up by 2010.

The new V8’s compact size enables it to fit within the same space as petrol units, offering GM the flexibility to introduce it in a wide variety of vehicles to meet market demand and new CAFE regulations.

It is expected to deliver 231kW of power and an enormous 705Nm, returing a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over comparable petrol engines.

The environmental benefits of the new engine include a 13-percent reduction in CO2 emissions and at least a 90-percent reduction in particulates and NOx compared to many diesel vehicles today.

“This new V-8 diesel meets the toughest emissions requirements in North America, and it also delivers an effortless performance feel because of its high torque across the speed range,” said Charlie Freese, executive director of GM Powertrain Diesel Engineering.

Maybe other way around, If it works in the G8 and is wanted that gives Holden reason enough to do it, Either way they will be testing it out from go to wo.
So it will be all good for everyone.

It would work great, if a little heavy, as a high performance engine in cars but the new 2.9L V6 diesel coming out of Europe would be a better match for most people and offer much better fuel economy I would guess. Depends on your priorities. I'd love a G8 with the 2.9L.

With diesel fuel close to $4.50 I don't see no benefit. So what I will get 35mpg in my G8 for example and pay high diesel fuel costs. Yup that saves me money. With more diesels on the road it will give oil companies an incentive to raise diesel prices even more.

The success of the Audi R8 TDI will determine if we get a performance car with a duramax. I for one think it would be awesome. Better mileage and tons more potential for tuning ect.

VE Cross8 plus this thing = maximum WIN.

Chuck it in a Rodeo too .... that will knock the socks of the TRD Hilux

The diesel option would probably be prohibitively expensive combined with high diesel fuel costs = no go. I'll stick with gasoline.

Agreed - I'd much rather see a V6 diesel in the Commodore/G8 instead of the Duramax...

...however, the 4.5 liter Duramax would be nice in a performance variant, if they were so inclined!

Re: GM's New 4.5L V8 Duramax Turbo-Diesel: Will The Holden Commodore Get It?

Given the added weight over a diesel, the 4.5L would be more at home in a RWD Lucerne/DTS. Adding that much weight to the nose would make a RWD car "push like a dump truck" to quote Ward Burton.

It would work well in the Lambda vehicles as well. Hopefully more bio diesel will be available soon.

Don't worry gasoline will soon catch up to diesel prices.

Yeah, it will and Diesel will also go up. Diesel fuel use to be less expensive than gasoline. What happened?
