GM and Holden considering Toyota 86 rival

General Motors boss says affordable rear-wheel drive coupe is “on the list” – and it could become a Holden
    Published : Wednesday, 16 January 2013
    http://www.carsales.com.au/news/smal...86-rival-34538

Holden could add a Toyota 86 fighter to its armoury if General Motors North America boss Mark Reuss succeeds in his ambition to bring a budget-buy rear-wheel drive Chevrolet coupe to market.

While not confirmed for production, the idea was previewed by the 2012’s Code 130R concept car (pictured) and is on the wishlist of the former Holden boss.

The 86 – which is sold as the Scion FR-S in the US - and its almost identical twin, the Subaru BRZ, swept all before them in 2012, with demand exceeding supply and car of the year awards piling up in response to their affordable rear-drive oversteer antics.

If it happens it might get to market by 2020. just like a RHD Vette (from factory)might get here sometime during the planet Earths estimated 6 billion years remaining (or whatever the number is)

    Yes please!

Can we also get Kappa back, the Solstice and Sky had too short of a run.

No it isn't. This should go below the Camaro.

Can we make it small? Camaro's...kinda big. And with a greenhouse that's easier to see out of.

That is really part of the challenge, with the Corvette going even further up market that gives the Camaro some breathing room. What I find interesting is this, the Scion FRS in the states is 2,790 pounds. The Solstice was 2,860 pounds in base form, these two vehicles were pretty close in weight. With the way GM is now obsessed with mass I think that they could find 200 pounds to remove from this vehicle. The FRS is 9 inches longer yet 2 inches narrower, so I think they are pretty comparable when it comes to size.

The CODE 130R is much bigger then the FRS/BRZ as a result I actually expect it to be heavier (maybe closer to 3,000 pounds even).

Also if I remember right the Solstice was $20,000 when it launched and the FRS/BRZ in the states is $25,000 starting. Adjusting for inflation the FRS/BRZ is about $2,000 more expensive.....

Most interesting quote from Reuss in the story:

“We would do something with the knowledge of Alpha and the background, but we wouldn’t take Alpha and try and shrink it.”

    So....a different architecture?

Still talking about it. Is anyone surprised? I was hoping they would shock me, grow a pair of balls and bring the Code to market ASAP.
Nope, same old GM. Lazy, confused morons with no plan and no direction.
Of all the car companies in the world I had to pick GM. Goes well with my Mets, Jets, and Chargers I guess.

Re: GM and Holden considering Toyota 86 rival

The Subaru BRZ is two decades too late - they should have built it as a coupe version of the Impreza when Impreza first launched. Toyota were only interested because it's the only way to get hold of a small/medium platform with longitudinal engine, thanks to Subaru's dinosaur-like retention of the boxer engine. It certainly won't save Subaru as a whole.

All of GM's small/medium platforms are transverse engined so they'd either be starting from scratch or downsizing the Camaro.

Re: GM and Holden considering Toyota 86 rival

Such a vehicle for GMNA should NOT be a Chevy!
But another brand where it would be rightfully placed.
    And I'm not talking Buick.

    !!!
IF It's A Chevrolet & RWD, Don't ride in it!!!

ALL Chevy's NEED to be FWD/F-AWD!!!

    If it's a Toyota/Lexus/Scion, Don't ride in/drive it!!

Just do it GM. Would it be too politically incorrect to make it a Solstice coupe?
