Fleets To Reward Diesels, Says Expert - Holden & Ford In The Race?

Fleets To Reward Diesels

David Hassall
22 April 2008
www.goauto.com.au

Fleet chief says first local diesel car will be richly rewarded but jury remains out.

Ford Australia could score a market coup with fleet operators if it successfully becomes the first local manufacturer to produce a large turbo-diesel passenger car.

In fact, diesels could be the key to rescuing Australia’s traditional ‘big six’ car market, which is already shrinking and could become unsustainable within a decade if it remains dependent on petrol engines.

As GoAuto reported earlier this month, Ford will produce V6 diesel-engined Falcon and Territory models from 2010, while large-car rival Holden is understood to be still working on a business case for a turbo-diesel Commodore.

According to a leading fleet management company, the environment is now a major purchasing consideration and the first Australian car-maker to offer a large diesel car will be rewarded with the big prize of more fleet orders.

Its a case where Holden have been huffing and puffing about that particular engine for 12-18 months and everytime it is aired, the GMHQ beancounters seem to rush to kill it off.

I think they are making it an exclusive engine for the Cadillac and if they do, I'll seriously think of a Ford Australia diesel.

It doesn't make sense to have a large car (or truck) without a diesel offering. You do pay more, but it gives you both power and efficiency. I wish we had a premium small car offering in the US with a diesel, got to love prius slaying economy.

If this is true... that Ford WILL BUILD a diesel and Holden is WORKING ON A BUSINESS CASE, then hats off to Ford. They deserve to win this race.

That said the article might be wrong, and Holden could very well have started the process of putting the diesel into the Commodore.

Now either they are lazy in checking or just forgettfull but that same site published an article on Jan 31 saying that Holden will have a diesel Commodore on sale within 18 months and was put up on here the same day i believe, its on page 4 in the Holden news but they dont give any firm details or anything but id say Holden know how important a fuel efficient diesel in a large car is and would have had prototypes running around for a while now

Current Captiva diesel adverts highlight 20% more fuel efficiency than Ford Territory petrol

Current local price of diesel fuel is close to 20% more expensive than petrol

I'd say Ford's diesel will be imported like the rest of the V6 range they will be using as of 2010

I have currently (and from new) a dual fuel VS Acclaim. I am in no hurry to get rid of it!!

And in Australia, I have worked out the code that is used to identify the Alloytec Holden V6 engines that have been set aside for use with factory fitted Dual Fuel on the VE Omegas and Berlinas.
