Chevrolet Camaro Stars At 2007 Melbourne Motor Show - 2009 Australian Release?

Holden-Engineered Camaro Is Australia-Bound!

Terry Martin & Neil McDonald
1 March 2007
www.goauto.com.au

GM Holden will unveil the stunning new Chevrolet Camaro coupe at tomorrow's Melbourne International Motor Show opening to demonstrate its role as GM’s global development centre for medium-large rear-wheel drive cars – and to talk up the prospects of it coming to Australia.

Expected to be built for overseas markets in Canada from early 2009, the Camaro coupe (and its convertible sibling unveiled at Detroit in January) are now seen as strong contenders to sit alongside Saab, Hummer, Cadillac and other GM brands in Holden’s emerging premium dealerships.

It can also now be considered a stopgap measure for muscle-car coupe diehards who are waiting for the next-generation Monaro – the car that GoAuto exclusively revealed last year had entered development. The new Monaro will be based on the same Holden-developed architecture as the Camaro.

What if the first year of Camaros are imported from Australia? What if they do that and surprise everyone? That lets them have the car here late this year or early next with the Oshawa built ones coming online the year after. They are already going to build the G8. Building the Camaro on the same platform since it's being engineered down under should not be a great leap.

It would be a marketing & PR coup for GM.

Build the Camaro here, ship it there. The Camaro is awesome, they should ship it all over the world. More importantly, the Camaro does something that no Japanese car can do, it envokes passion, excitment, and emotion. Every GM car should be like that.

There is more to it than that, the camaro's platform is Long-short-short while the G8 and its holden twins are short-med-short plus there are likley to be enginering tweeks here and there, besides if the tooling isnt complete for the canada factory then why whould the aussies build it any quicker? and also look at how many cars that factory is bulding already, GM is talking about building G8's in NA if demand is high enough due to the fact that the Aussie factory can only build so many vehicles. But I wonder if the Aussie Camaro would have a bowtie or a lion?

"Holden-Engineered Camaro"

haha.
Although I'm sure Chev designed the body/interior ....and the engine is American too. (But the V6 might be Australian actually, haha).

Did anyone read this?

Bowtie for sure, because it will be a 'premium' vehicle, and sold through 'GM premium' dealerships, which will be dealerships that sell any GM car that isnt a Holden.

Because we hear that the Zeta platform is flexible and Australia is building Zetas. The plant in Oshawa is still building the last gen of cars and hasn't been refitted for Zeta yet.

So my thinking is that when GM builds a Zeta factory it must be able to build all the varieties, not just one. Otherwise, what's the point.

Besides, if they build 25,000 - 50,000 Camaros just to get them out a year early -- assuming the Aussies have capacity -- then that would be a coup. They're already planning on bringing over G8s hence my thought on the Camaro.

To me, Zeta is Zeta.

Bleh, if thats the case I hope they give it the old camaro emblem, I like the bowtie but it looks like crap on this camaro, I'm all for letting people know chevy makes the camaro but in north america everyone knows that and in australia it doesnt matter because its a little doubtful they'll see the camaro on the street and be urged to look into chevy and import a Malibu.

Nothing can convince Jeremy Clarkson that any American car is worth owning--especially after his Ford GT was such a pile of crap.

but this Camaro is based on an Australian car that he LOVES (well, I assume he will, since its like the Monaro, but better).

Unless he just hates the design and interior of the Camaro.

If it has an American badge, he will FIND something to hate about it.

The man absolutely despises this country--he's said so on numerous occasions.
