Australia's Top 100 Greatest Motorsport Legends Named

The Definitive List - Australia's Top 100 Motorsport Legends

Samantha Stevens
4 July 2007
www.wheelsmag.com.au

It is the age-old Aussie argument that rivals the Holden vs Ford debate - who is Australia's greatest racecar driver?

Auto Action has assembled an elite judging panel to vote in Australia's 100 greatest drivers.

The panel consists of 16 motor racing critics, technical experts and drivers, including F1 driver Mark Webber and Williams F1 Technical Director Sam Michael, V8 Supercar legend Craig Lowndes, Champ Car driver Will Power, and Wheelsmag.com.au contributor Peter McKay.

And the winner is?

Don't think you can argue with that list too much, but even as a Holden guy, I am surprised to see **** Johnson not in the top 10. Lowndes needs so more time to prove himself... even as a championship winner.

Certainly the top 3 is hard to split, 2 F1 champions, 1 a builder of his own F1 championship winning car, Brockie raced all sorts of competitions and made Bathurst his own.

Interesting how the first nine are clustered in groups of three very close together. A good sign that it was hard to get a definitive leader.

Dunno about Lowndes, I agree with you Bernie I'm surprised that **** Johnson isnt there. The guy won 5 Touring Car championships and 3? Bathursts compared to Lowndes winning 3 Championships and 2 Bathursts. Not sure Lowndes has doen enough to be ranked higher than him.

C'mon mods. Is the word "****" really that offensive it can't be left in a post?

Hmmm. Wasn't sure of it would get through with the quotation marks, obviously not. For anyone who's wondering, his proper name is Richard.

It is appropriate when it's applied to Richard (boo hoo, those nasty Holden fans rolled a rock onto my Falcon) Johnson

This set the scene for most of his career...always looking for someone else to blame when he didnt win...it was never the driver (him) or that his car wasn't up to it....a shame because he had many good wins with great cars.

Only because I think lists like these and people's places in them are matters of history and become clearer over time. Skaify and others are too young to be properly ranked yet.

I know the subtext is "drivers", but "motorsport legends" is a bit of a falsehood without at least Doohan.
