Australian & New Zealand October 2009 Sales Results: Toyota Powers On
Australian October 2009 Sales Results
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries 5 November 2009 www.fcai.com.au The October new car market provides evidence of a broadening economic recovery with sales up on a year ago for the first time in 16 months. Official VFACTS data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) shows that 80,813 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles were sold in October 2009 – an increase of 2.2 per cent compared to the same month last year. “This was a good solid monthly result with the welcome return of private, business and rental buyers in larger numbers,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said. “This is the first month since June 2008 that sales have increased when compared to the year before,” he said. “The industry is looking to round out the year on a positive note and we expect a further surge in sales as businesses move to take advantage of the successful tax break prior to the end of the year,” Mr McKellar said. “While the latest figures are encouraging we would urge the Reserve Bank to proceed with caution in contemplating further interest rate rises until the foundations of a full recovery are clearly established,” He said. The SUV segment led the market in October recording a 9.5 per cent increase, followed by light commercials (up 3.4 per cent) and passenger cars (up 1.3 per cent). Heavy commercial vehicles recorded a decline of 24.9 per cent. Year-to-date 762,787 new vehicles have been sold, down 11.7 per cent compared to the same period last year. Toyota remains in the top sales position for October with 17,888 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 10,737 and Ford with 8,240. Top Australian Brands October 2009 Brand - Sales 1. Toyota - 17888 2. Toyota Camry - 1817 New Zealand October 2009 Sales Results Motor Industry Association New Zealand 5 November 2009 www.mia.org.nz Motor Industry Association CEO Perry Kerr says that the motor industry isn’t out of the woods yet, with October’s new passenger vehicle sales only up fractionally on September’s results. “ While we are satisfied that the new car market appears to be holding showing a minimal increase in passenger car sales from September to October, we are still cautious about prospects for the remained of the year and are taking a taking a slow but steady approach ” says Kerr. October sales figures for new passenger cars showed that 5,680 were registered, the highest month recorded thus far in 2009. October’s passenger sales were up fractionally by 1.6% on September, though were still down 24.1% on the same month a year ago. Commercial vehicle sales took a drop in October, with 1,218 registrations, down 16.2% on September. “The October sales results were to be expected and still remain within the industry’s projections. The end of 2008 saw the start of a drop in sales, we anticipate year end numbers to be inline with those results.” Toyota continues as market leader with Holden and Ford rounding out the top three marques in the new passenger vehicle sector. Toyota also topped the commercial vehicle sales followed by Ford and Nissan. Year to date, Toyota still leads with overall total market share of 21.35%, followed by Ford with 12.38% and Holden with 9.43%. October saw the Toyota Corolla as the top selling passenger model, followed by the Holden Commodore and in third place the Ford Falcon. Year to date figures show the Toyota Corolla still continues as the country’s best-selling model with sales of 4,145 units sold, ahead of the Holden Commodore with 2,539 units and the Suzuki Swift with 1,969 units. Re: Australian & New Zealand October 2009 Sales Results: Toyota Powers On
I dont remember last months sales figures but is Commodore down? And looks like toyota had something goin on to get corolla and hilux in top 2.
Great month for Cruze, finally got some more onto the ship, seriously can someone explain to me how in a world market thats down that Daewoo cant increase production so that Holden can get at least 2500 Cruzes a month minimum or even 3000 a month for the next few months to clear the backlog of orders, would be good if Holden could get these customers into their Cruze and try keep them in the Holden family of cars. Do any of the Holden mods know why Daewoo is having trouble making enough?? Cant say im sad to see the camry down in 10th, the less i see of these ugly cars on the road the better, will have to ask my friend at work who is a toyota salesman during the day what evil plan they came up with to sell so many corollas. |

I'd also like to see Holden get a few more Cruze into the country
It would be sweet to see it outsell the Falcon ![]() |

Re: Australian & New Zealand October 2009 Sales Results: Toyota Powers On
Yes it is, but it used to outsell Holden (by more than 2:1) and Ford combined a short while back. Things like Ford's new Fiesta which is marching on in sales; and the extra four cylinder version of the Captiva coming in December should be helping that vehicle put a mortgage topselling SUV spot, which it took with it's highest-ever sales last month.
The extra 2WD base six and diesel versions are obviously what the market wanted. It's encouraging the Falcon is coming back in sales, too. Obviously the GFC artificially suppressed sales last year. Not sure why the Commodore's numbers aren't bigger. They might have been building cars for M-E or something, as the orders are apparently good for the new models, but only registered sales count to VFACTs. The Cruze selling 28 less than the Mazda 3 is very impressive, given the Mazda is avaialble in hatch (very important derivative here) and more trims including the sport models; and the Cruze is a sedan-only. Holden needs an updated Barina (Aveo) and midsize car (Epica) to make more inroads into Toyota. But Holden traditionally hasn't been regarded as a SUV or smallcar supplier in Oz comparable to the Japanese, so it's good they seem to be making big strides with both classes.

The old Holden vs. Ford debates are good fun, sometimes too far...
...but I really couldnt care which one it is, I just want to see one outsell Toyota. tgagneguam sums it up well... absolutely nauseating (I don't mean to be so anti-Toyota...I'm interested in all cars really, they just don't make it easy.) Thanks Joe T for putting these posts up, they're always very interesting to see.

Re: Australian & New Zealand October 2009 Sales Results: Toyota Powers On
The Corolla has had a limited edition feature packed deal going for a while so that'd have had some impact. I really wish people would broaden their horizons and actually look and test drive other cars. I know quite a few people who just go and test drive the toyota and then buy it. It's stupid that they dont even compare or consider another brand. I'd pick a focus over a carolla anyday.
Also mining companies must have snapped up more hiluxes? Ford should bring the F-150 over, would be interesting to see how it went in the sales. |

toyota were selling "edge" editions all month, no doubt would have had something to do with the bonus numbers.
Holden's production of Ute's, HSV's and Middle East exports were increased massively also. (none of which count as Commodore sales) will be interesting to see how the numbers go in November with the arrivals of the International and SSV G8 packs |

Re: Australian & New Zealand October 2009 Sales Results: Toyota Powers On
It's getting harder and harder to justify the Falcon's existence, based on these sales figures. With Ford barely managing half of Toyota's volume, the enormous cost of developing a product that won't even crack 50,000 sales per annum is difficult to justify, especially since, unlike Holden, there's zero export potential for the Falcon, and the Territory is exported to Thailand and South Africa only in penny-numbers.
And am I the only one stunned by Hyundai's rise to fourth place? Their sales in Europe are also on the rise, and plenty of Americans are no longer laughing at the brand. If the i30 and Genesis are any indication, not to mention that awesome upcoming Tiburon replacement, it won't just be Toyota giving GM execs the sweats. |

^^^Thanks gmh-VX. I still think they are some of the best wheels yet.

I think one of the biggest motivators is, if it is gone, so is the Ute and Territory as well as Fords reputation in Aus. It IS only a small market, but a strong presence here is better than joining the rest of the importers in a price war (especially when anything they use to replace the Falcon, comes via very unfavourable exchange rates). Playing the exporter role for a LHD will cost them very big bickies and I'm pretty sure they don't want that additional debt hanging over them right now.
