Australian & New Zealand May 2009 Sales Results: Commodore Leads Stabilising Market
Australian May 2009 Sales Results
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries 3 June 2009 www.fcai.com.au There is positive news in the latest vehicle sales figures with increased business purchases providing a much-needed confidence boost to the market. Official VFACTS data released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) shows that 75,439 passenger cars, SUVs and commercial vehicles were sold in May 2009 – down 14.9 per cent (13,201 vehicles) compared to the same month in 2008. “The May figures provide a tangible indication that new vehicle sales have stabilised and indeed there are even grounds to suggest we may see signs of improvement in coming months,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said. Sales to business buyers in May were only down 7.2 per cent on a year ago. “There is clear evidence that the Federal Government’s business tax break is providing the market with a renewed sense of optimism and confidence,” Mr McKellar said. “The business tax break is proving extremely effective, providing a much needed boost to vehicle sales and stimulating economic activity,” he said. “Vehicle brands have been promoting this incentive heavily in recent few months and since the legislation has been passed there has been a perceptible increase in business sales,” he said. Year-to-date 352,374 new vehicles have been sold, down 19.2 per cent compared to the same period last year. Toyota continued in the top sales position in May with 15,481 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 9,177 and Ford with 8,440. Top Australian Brands May 2009 Brand - Sales 1. Toyota - 15481 2. Year to date, the new vehicle market is running at approximately two-thirds the level of the same period last year, but recent trends would suggest that this is as low as it will go. Toyota remains in control of the market share stakes for both passenger and commercial vehicles, helped by an impressive performance in the commercial vehicle market. The small car segment dominated May sales with the Suzuki Swift taking the honours, followed by Toyota Corolla, Mazda3 and Hyundai Getz. Year to date Corolla has opened up a lead over Commodore. Falcon getting some traction at last. If Sportwagon hadn't been a hit, Commodore would be in trouble.

Whys the Hilux doing now outselling the rolla? I mean its a good ute and all and deserves a high market share but really #2 is pretty hard out. Is it all the commercial sales as I suspect?

Re: Australian & New Zealand May 2009 Sales Results: Commodore Leads Stabilising Mark
I've heard that Toyota is pretty competitive with their fleet deals and when you consider that a large bulk of the budget is aimed at boosting construction and civil engineering work (nation building), Hilux was always going to capitalise on that development.
Good to see that combined, Ford and Holden finally beat Toyota for market share Nice work fellas.

Re: Australian & New Zealand May 2009 Sales Results: Commodore Leads Stabilising Mark
Without having any model sales, the NZ manufacturers sales looked like:
1. Toyota - 1060 2. Ford - 634 3. Hyundai - 443 4. Nissan - 421 5. Mazda - 420 6. Holden - 400 7. Suzuki - 369 8. Honda - 221 9. Kia - 175 10. Mitsubishi - 165 11. Volkswagen - 126 12. Subaru - 100 13. Mercedes Benz - 99 14. Audi - 90 15. BMW - 82 Toyota were about 60:40 Cars:Commercials, hence it seems the Hilux/Hiace market has recovered. Nissan look to be on the recovery track now that the Qashqai is finally here. The big winner is still Hyundai, can't really blame people for going that way when they promise to buy back your car if you get made redundant. Last edited by Ssom : 06-03-2009 at 03:17 AM. |

Re: Australian & New Zealand May 2009 Sales Results: Commodore Leads Stabilising Mark
Oh snap. Holdens got some real problems usually 3rd now falling to 6th how far can they go? Its no GST and Field-days promos haven't exactly worked any wonders, but hopefully the arrival of Cruze will push it back up into top 3, hopefully. However if Commodore sales continue to slow then I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Suzuki overtook them with the introduction of the Alto (I think its called).

Re: Australian & New Zealand May 2009 Sales Results: Commodore Leads Stabilising Mark
Camry at 10 and Aurion still out of the top 10 toyota wont be happy bout that
Holden will be desperate for the Cruze to get up to at least 1000-1500 a month as soon as possible and crack the top 10. |

Ford seems closer to holden than usual. Just wondering, when was the last time Ford outsold them?

Re: Australian & New Zealand May 2009 Sales Results: Commodore Leads Stabilising Mark
Im still rather surprised the the Corolla is still selling well with its around 10% Price increase it makes it a little bit more expensive than other 2.0L which are all around better cars. I guess I should reserve judgment until I see the discount fleets would get. The cruze couldn't have come at a more desperate time for Holden NZ.

I just added a shipload more car sales results to the Aussie list.
![]() The original list didn't include the Mitsubishi Triton in the Top 10, pushing the Camry out.
