Australian & New Zealand June 2008 Sales Results: Corolla & HiLux Beat Commodore
Australian June 2008 Sales Results
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries 3 July 2008 www.fcai.com.au The Australian motor vehicle market has set new half year and fiscal year records, despite rising interest rates and fuel prices. Official VFACTS figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show that 542,695 new cars, trucks and buses were sold in the first six months of 2008 – up 18,319 or 3.5 per cent on the same period in 2007. The sales total for the 2007-08 fiscal year was 1,068,301, which was an increase of almost 65,000 vehicles over the previous financial year. "The continued growth of the motor vehicle market so far this year is an encouraging result given current economic circumstances," said the Chief Executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Andrew McKellar. "Business sales in particular have remained resilient in the face of interest rate rises, fuel price increases and general turbulence in world financial markets." Sales for the month of June were also a record at 106,541 - an increase of 1,444 or 1.4 per cent over the same month last year, and an all-time record for any month in Australian motor vehicle sales history. Andrew McKellar said the FCAI forecasts the market will again exceed one million motor vehicle sales in the calendar year, having first passed that milestone last December with a total of 1,049,982. "While there are reasons to be cautious about the general market outlook in the second half of the year, the industry remains confident that total 2008 sales will once again top one million units," he said. The single largest contributor to sales growth so far this year has been the Medium SUV segment, which has added 6,662 sales or 18.5 per cent. Small car segment sales have grown by 5,410 sales or 4.6 per cent, while two-wheel drive Pick-up/Cab-chassis sales have grown by 4,158 sales or 12.0 per cent. Toyota remained market leader in June, selling 25,624 vehicles, which was an all-time record for any brand in any month. Toyota was also the top-selling marque in the first half of the year with 127,440 sales or 23.5 per cent of the market, followed by Holden with 67,123 (12.4 per cent) and Ford with 54,469 (10.0 per cent). The most popular car year-to-date is Toyota's Corolla with 24,415 sales, ahead of Holden Commodore with 23,323 and Toyota HiLux with 22,132. Top Australian Brands June 2008 Brand - Sales - YTD 1. Registrations of new vehicles in New Zealand have defied the economic gloom with a strong bounce back in June. After May results suggested that new vehicles had joined the downturn being experienced in other sectors, June produced a strong recovery. 6753 new cars found owners in June, a 20% increase on the May figure, and a 5.5% increase on June 2007, but new commercial vehicles produced an even more spectacular result. Sales of 2877 new commercial vehicles represented not only a 44% increase on May, but the best June result since 1982. “This is confirmation that the era of imported used vehicles dominating the New Zealand vehicle market is all but over,” said Perry Kerr. CEO of the Motor Industry Association. “Despite an economy going through tough times, new vehicle sales are continuing at the highest levels seen in the last twenty years. Toyota continued to dominate the new vehicle market with a year to date share almost double that of their nearest rival. The top selling new car in June (and year to date) was the Toyota Corolla, which is establishing a year to date lead over the Holden Commodore. Top New Zealand Brands June 2008 Brand - Sales 1. Toyota Tops June Sales Boom
Marton Pettendy 3 July 2008 www.goauto.com.au New vehicle sales reached an all-time record in the first half of 2008 according to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), despite soaring fuel prices and a number of interest rate rises this year. Official VFACTS sales figures released today by the FCAI show that 106,541 new cars, trucks and buses were retailed in June - a 1.4 per cent (or 1444-vehicle) increase on the same month last year, and an all-time record for any month in Australian motor vehicle sales history. A total of 542,695 sales so far in 2008 is up 3.5 per cent or 18,319 vehicles on figures recorded in 2007, when a record total of 1,049,982 new vehicles were sold, while the sales total for the 2007-08 financial year was 1,068,301 - an increase of almost 65,000 vehicles over the previous financial year. Seasonally adjusted, the industry is on target to achieve 1.081 million new-vehicle sales. Click here to continue article ![]() |

Wow, that's domination at its finest. I wonder if Commodore will even get back on top considering the current market.
+ How did Mistubishi get in the top ten? Did a ship just come in or what! Combined Camry and Aurion sales also out sold the Commodore. Is this the first time that Aurion has beaten Camry?

Not investing in making the Torana concept a reality is now coming back to haunt Holden. I'd say that's easily their biggest mistake since I've been following the company.

I'd have to agree, though they're pretty sturdy as a company the edge is very thin down here. We need the Torana, we want the Torana, they need to make the Torana.

Remember that the Ute is now counted separately, i don't think that was always the case.

For the second month in a row, the Mondeo has sold over 500 units, which is great to see it hitting it's sales target, while the Volkswagen Passat also sold well and also outselling the Mondeo!!
The Epica was hit with supply issues - not sure what issues they are - and again sold under 100 units. Infact, Renault's all new Laguna even outsold the Epica for the second month in a row!! |

Re: Australian & New Zealand June 2008 Sales Results: Corolla & HiLux Beat Commodore
It's painful to read about the ebb of GM globally month after month, to watch a formerly great industrial icon shrivel with barely a glimmer of fight. It has become completely content to hand over sales.
It might be even more painful to read people's naive interpretation of this ebb as part of a grand plan to return to profitability rather than the more realistic view that it represents a group of managers who fail to understand how to run a successful automaking enterprise. To be clear, it's not the storied brands that are the problem; it's the poorly armed captains of the ships who need to step aside. |

What if they replaced the Epica with a "Holden Malibu" or something?

And if GM just threw billions of dollars at every type of car the people on here seem to think will save the company they would be dead and gone by now, GM are bleeding bad and dont have the money to go out and design all new platforms for a segment of car they dont have. And the Torana concept was made to show future design cues for the VE and as a idea to GM about a "possible" RWD 3 series style small car, it was never a definate that it would be made or even get past concept stage. Now would i love it if they did build something like this, hell yea, i love the LX SS, gorgeous car, but GM need to be sensible how they spend (waste) there money for the next couple years till the new contracts kick in and i cant see how a car like this will be a high priority right now, but who knows maybe Holden are already designing some prototypes for testing, but while ever Holden are the majoirty share holder of Daewoo i think its safe to say that the Epica will be here for a while, but the new one better be a serious upgrade to what they have now. |
