Australian & New Zealand June 2007 Sales Results: New Corolla Beats Commodore To No.1

Australian June 2007 Car Sales Results

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries
4 July 2007
www.fcai.com.au

Australia passes million motor vehicle milestone.

Australians have for the first time bought more than a million new motor vehicles in a financial year, according to retail sales figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

The VFACTS figures show that a total of 1,004,097 were sold in the 2006-2007 financial year, surpassing the previous best of 981,791 sold in 2004-05.

The automotive industry's much-anticipated milestone was achieved on the back of record monthly sales in June.

A total 105,097 vehicles were sold last month – up 8649 or 9.0 per cent on the same month last year. It was the highest sales for any month in the industry's history.

"This is an outstanding result for the Australian motor industry," said the FCAI's Chief Executive, Andrew McKellar. "The success is broadly based and includes almost every brand and vehicle segment."

"Australians have now been buying new motor vehicles in record numbers for most of the last six years and that reflects the great value and choice which consumers now enjoy."

For the six months to the end of June, motor vehicle sales totalled 524,376 – up 41,216 or 8.5 per cent on the same period of 2006.

Most of the extra volume in June was generated by the Light, Small and Medium passenger car segments which combined added 5244 sales.

In addition, the Large car segment was up 3.7 per cent and Upper Large segment which was up 28.3 per cent.

"New models from local car makers continue to sell encouragingly well, underpinning overall domestic manufacturing volumes," said Andrew McKellar.

The Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Market was up 4.9 per cent in June while the Light Truck Market was up a modest 2.0 per cent.

Toyota remained clear market leader in June, selling 24,539 vehicles – an all-time record for any brand in any month.

Holden held second place with 14,256 and Ford third with 10,304.

The FCAI says all indications are that the second half of the calendar year will continue the trend of the first.

"Given the current strong level of vehicle affordability, continuing high employment, rising incomes and asset values, we believe that vehicle sales will continue at this accelerated pace through the remainder of 2007," said Andrew McKellar.

New Zealand June 2007 Car Sales Results

Motor Industry Association New Zealand
4 July 2007
www.mia.org.nz

June new vehicle sales maintain the momentum.

2007 is proving to be a virtual mirror image of 2006 with regard to new vehicle sales. New car sales for the month of June reached 6399, seven units ahead of June 2006 and 55 units up on May. 2552 new commercial vehicles found owners in June, just 47 fewer than in June last year, but 501 ahead of May.

Year to date, with half the year gone, new car sales reached 37005, 0.3% down on the first half of 2006, and new commercial vehicle sales, at 12170, were 0.4% down on the same period last year.

“It continues to be a healthy market for new vehicles, particularly when measured in historical terms,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association. “This is the fourth successive year in which the market will reach around 100,000 units.”

Toyota is maintaining market share similar to that of last year and in doing so is stretching their lead over Ford and Holden. From the sales tables so far a changing market is evident and we see a number of brands that are increasing their market share over 2006. These include Honda, Mazda, Hyundai and Suzuki.

Commodore continues to be New Zealand’s top selling model for both the month and year to date. Corolla remains in second place with Falcon third.

New Corolla Pips Commodore In Sales Debut

Jez Spinks
4 July 2007
www.drive.com.au

Toyota's 10th-generation small car has beaten Holden's large car in a bumper June for new-vehicle sales.

Toyota's new Corolla has beaten the Holden Commodore to the No.1 spot in its first full month on sale as new vehicles break the one-million barrier for the first time in a fiscal year.

The Japanese brand's 10th-generation small car was the best-selling vehicle in June, with 5,890 sales. Australia's tradtional favourite, the Holden Commodore, was a close second with 5,588.

A bumper month for many vehicles, boosted by end-of-financial-year clearances, contributed to the best ever sales result for June. 105,097 new vehicles sold completed a total of 1,004,097 new vehicles sold in a 12-month period.

The 2007 year-to-date figure of 524,376 vehicles keeps the Australian new-car market on course to pass one-million units for the first time in a calendar year.

Many manufacturers claimed record new-car sales, although Toyota has the biggest boast. Its 24,539 total for June is the highest monthly total ever achieved by a car maker in Australia. Its Commodore and Falcon rival, the Aurion, also had its best monthly sales result, with 2,626.

Local Market Exceeds 1 Million Sales

Ken Gratton

Aussie market has passed the million mark for the financial year.

Australia's new car market has broken the million sales barrier. While projections for the calendar year predict a record, the '06/07 financial year saw the Australian new vehicle market top the million sales mark.

According to the FCAI, VFACTS figures for the 2006/07 financial year totalled 1,004,097 units. This is a record figure for any given 12-month period in the history of the Australian motor industry.

It's going to be one huge anti-climax if the market doesn't exceed a million for the calendar year as well.

As the final month of the financial year, June is the month when all the car companies go mad with clearance sales. This year was no exception, with the added inertia of five months of record sales, prompting a stellar performance for the month.

Passenger vehicle sales for June 2007 were 11.8 per cent (6742 units) ahead of June 2006. SUV and light commercial vehicle ('LCV') sales were also ahead compared with June '06, although the big movers were the passenger cars.

Toyota was the market leader for June, ahead of second-placed Holden by 40,404 units (a margin of 7.7 per cent market share).

The top selling car for the month was the Toyota Corolla, with 5890 units sold. Holden's VE Commodore was close behind on 5588.

I agree that they are bland, and I am sick of them being #1 everywhere. But if GM and Ford don't build much better cars they will just decline while Toyota grows even more. Toyotas get good gas mileage, are top 10 reliability and have good fit and finish, the build quality is good, this has led to an incredibly high perception of their products. I must admit, sitting in the Camry at the auto show this year, the interior is better than any current Chevy or the LaCrosse. I don't like the Camry but I get why people buy it.

So, will the corolla make this a regular monthly occurance?
What do people think about this? Many believe the corolla wouldn't touch the VE for top sales...

Re: Australian & New Zealand June 2007 Sales Results: New Corolla Beats Commodore To No.1

I'd personally much rather Holden stayed the biggest seller - but it is important to note Corolla sales aren't at the expense of the Commodore, as in it didn't drop any. If it had been down 10-20% I would be more worried.

Not the first time, probably not the last the Commys been outsold by a small car. It is the first time it has happened not on model changeover. But the Commodore is still posting a solid showing of 5.5K a month for a car that's been on the market almost 12 months.

More worrying is the combined sales of Aurion and Camry, now approaching Commodore sales.

Mind you, Toyota's been chucking cars out with big discounts - double what Holden is doing.

Re: Australian & New Zealand June 2007 Sales Results: New Corolla Beats Commodore To No.1

I think the figures for Commodore are sedan only though, I dont think the ute and wagon are out yet. These would increase the Commodores sales significantly and easily bridge the gap of a couple of hundred cars or whatever it is Corolla were ahead.

If Holden was really worried about Commodore sales perhaps they could consider a new transmission (ie 6 speed) for the series 2 considering the current four speed has been around since the VN or VL.
