Australian & New Zealand July 2007 Sales Results: Commodore Overtakes Corolla
Australian July 2007 Car Sales Results
Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries 3 August 2007 www.fcai.com.au Family car buyers have helped the Australian motor vehicle market continue its record run, according to figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). VFACTS figures for July show that a record 86,291 cars, trucks and buses were sold last month – up 8729 vehicles or 11.3 per cent on the same month last year. While most segments of the market enjoyed growth, the strongest additional sales volume occurred in the family-oriented segments of Large cars, Medium cars and Compact SUVs. FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said sales growth in 2007 was more widely spread amongst the segments. "In 2006 the dynamics of the automotive market were dominated by small and light car sales but this year the sales action has been more broadly based – and the July results reinforce that trend," said Mr McKellar. Large car sales rose by 1945 vehicles or 18.6 per cent, Medium car sales increased by 1323 or 21.7 per cent and SUV Compact sales were up 1468 or 23.7 per cent. In comparison the largest single segment of the motor vehicle market – Small cars – rose by 396 vehicles of 3.9 per cent in July. So far this year the market total of 610,667 vehicles is running ahead of the same period in 2006 by 8.9 per cent. The FCAI is forecasting record total sales for the calendar year of more than one million vehicles. Andrew McKellar says that while the continued buoyancy in vehicle sales is pleasing, he sounds a slight note of caution about emerging economic challenges in the months ahead. "While the overall strength of the market in July is a tremendous result and we are on track for record annual sales, we shouldn't take the strength of the motor vehicle market for granted," said Mr McKellar. "In particular, there is nothing in these sales figures that in any way supports the case for an interest rate increase in the coming months. "There is no evidence of excess demand in the motor vehicle market. Supply has responded strongly to meet consumer demand, competition is intense and vehicle affordability is at record levels." Toyota was the best-selling brand in July with 19,047, ahead of Holden (12,343) and Ford (9006). Year-to-date Toyota leads with 22.2 per cent share of the market ahead of Holden (14.5 per cent) and Ford (10.4 per cent). Mazda (7.5 per cent), Mitsubishi (6.4), Nissan (6.0) and Honda (6.0) have all gained market share over the same period of last year. The new vehicle industry is celebrating its strongest July for two decades. 6382 new passenger cars were sold last month, making it the biggest July since 1987. New commercial vehicles performed even better, the 2497 commercial vehicles sold making it the biggest July since 1985. Year to date, the 2007 new vehicle market has moved ahead of the cumulative total at the same time in 2006. 43,387 new cars have been sold so far this year (0.6% up on 2006) and 14,667 new commercial vehicles have found owners (2.7% up). “The continuing strength of the new vehicle market in the face of economic uncertainty is most encouraging,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association. “It suggests that there is a strong and growing awareness amongst the public of the value, safety and environmental advantages of owning a new vehicle.” Toyota continues to build on its position as top-selling brand both in passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Holden is in second place in passenger cars, but Ford’s strength in commercials is helping them to hang onto second for total vehicles. Commodore is the top selling car model by an increasing margin, but an impressive second in July was Suzuki Swift. Top New Zealand Brands July 2007 Brand - Month 1. Toyota - 1791 2. Ford - 1190 3. Nice to see. Falcon coming back, too. Plus Camaurion numbers back down to a more realistic level. When they stop giving them away I reckon they'll drop back to 3K combined.

Why would you purchase a new camry? it's not an efficient 4cyl medium vehicle and why would you choose an aurion? it's not any better in the real world for fuel consumption over a falcon/commodore, this is where reality beats perception. To me aurion proves that a FWD vehicle is not an efficient choice over a large RWD vehicle and gasp, it's a Toyota ![]() |

Re: Australian & New Zealand July 2007 Sales Results: Commodore Overtakes Corolla
The little wobble we had in the dollar this week hopefully will keep the importers from more discounting, so I would expect, now Toycar is depleted of the old model, that Corolla sales will subside back to normal level of below 3k per month. Fuel prices have subsided, and the content deals on Falcon are pretty good ATM so it has a fighting chance at resuming 2nd place.
That is, unless those bloody-cardigan-wearers have taken heed of Smirkin' Pete and are out there 'doing their bit' for the Guv'mint! I know a few people who'd like to do their bit to Little Johhny and his bunch of lying. cheating, thieving @rseh0les! I'm off to the US in a couple of weeks, so by the time I get back in September hopefully Toyota will be pegged back in a few categories. |

Re: Australian & New Zealand July 2007 Sales Results: Commodore Overtakes Corolla
Stong Australian dollar is making it easy for importers. Talking to a friend who works for Nissan - they have re-introduced to Australia their previous Navarra model that dates back nearly ten years, to cope with demand; That model hasn't been imported in numbers for 18 months.
Sooner or later IMO there will be a backlash from people who've bought $20K 'whitegood' utilities for $35K and realise they are missing out on not only refinement in terms of space and mod cons, but also safety, comfort and dynamics. And when the 2nd hand market is flooded by gussied-up cheap commercials, that will get old, fast. They sell because you can get a loaded V6 ute for the cost of a 4-cyl medium sedan - but end of the day, a car is more than a motor and you get exactly what you pay for. The new VE Ute arrives this month, while the old model has trickled along OK. Look for the other brands to take a hit if it's half-decent. They've been making hay while the sun shines. Holden's core business is big cars. Whether they sell them all here, or sell half here and half overseas is not really important as long as that factory is humming. Toyota needs volume imports, because it's higher-value local product hasn't sold to plan. Without M-E exports, they'd be hurting. And I bet the high dollar isn't helping their competitiveness with other Camry sources. They hoped to maintain 30+K Camrys and add almost as many Aurions. That hasn't worked - Aurion has canibalised Camry, showing there is a limit to potential cardy-wearers. Last edited by BBDOS CV8 : 08-04-2007 at 12:41 AM. |
