New Zealand January 2008 Car Sales Results

Motor Industry Association New Zealand
7 Febuary 2008
www.mia.org.nz

New vehicle sales surge to all-time January record.

January new vehicle sales in New Zealand hit an all-time record – it was the biggest January ever recorded in the local market, with 7543 new cars and 1856 new commercial vehicles finding owners. New car sales were 11% up on January 2007 and new commercial vehicle sales were 9% up.

“What a tremendous start to the year,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association. “Not only was this the best January in the history of our industry, but it came after a particularly strong finish to the previous year.”

The new car industry has clearly shifted up a gear since the nineties, when the effect of used imports was affecting the ability of private buyers in particular to trade up to a new vehicle. “With stable pricing and much more predictable resale value, new vehicle buyers can now buy with confidence, and this is evident as new vehicle sales keep increasing while used import sales trend downwards,” said Mr. Kerr.

Toyota continued to lead the market in January by a wide margin, with Holden holding off Ford for second place. Surprise performers were Mazda in fourth place overall, and Suzuki in fourth place for passenger cars.

Toyota Corolla was the top selling model for the month, over 200 units ahead of Holden Commodore.

VFACTS January: Homegrown Heroes Decline

David Hassalll
5 February 2008
www.goauto.com.au

Australian new-car sales continue to race along at record-breaking pace, but the January VFACTS results could not conceal the harsh reality that locally-built large cars are in serious decline.

With the future of Mitsubishi once again focussing attention on Australian manufacturers, the January sales figures show that their market fortunes are now largely dependent on imports.

So, while the Mitsubishi 380 dropped 33.5 per cent to just 692 sales, the South Australian company actually saw its monthly tally increase by 11.6 per cent to 5084 sales on the strength of improved demand for Colt, Outlander, Pajero and especially Triton (up from 560 a year ago to 1218).

Ford Falcon sales tumbled in January to a disastrous 1252 – down some 36.6 per cent on the same month a year ago – while Territory dropped 18.2 per cent to 1099 against increased competition from imports.

Falcon #18 - that is amazing. Ford's going to need something pretty special from Orion to reverse this.
Considering the 380 is practically finished, Falcon is now worst selling large car, behind Aurion and Commodore. Do these figures include the Falcon Ute?
It's even behind the Ford Ranger Ute which I'd never heard of before.

Toyota has three cars in the top 5.

The Commodore is the only Holden model in the top ten, its a great car but it can't do everything.

I wouldn't read too much into January figures, it's the month where anything can happen. Expect Falcon sales to bounce back in February.

Falcon sales don't include Falcon Ute sales either.

Falcon Ute - 664
Commodore Ute - 932

You haven't heard of the Ford Ranger Ute?? Where have you been living, under a rock?? It repalced the Ford Courier Ute and is part of the model sharing agreement with Mazda. The Mazda version, is the Mazda BT-50 Ute.

The Captiva seems to be doing not too bad... not all that far from the Prada and Rav4.

It's true though... the poor Commodore can't be expected to take on Toyota all alone. Holden needs another car in the top 10... but as the Astra isn't all that fresh, I don't see it creeping up much higher.

January is holiday time, including most makers. All the sales levels are down, including Toyotas - check the Camry and Aurion figures - barely equal to one of them a month or two back. Plus Holden's been busy filling boats full of G8s running up to Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised to see the interest rate hikes start filtering through as slowing vehicle sales, too.

Late January is when people get the bad news about their Christmas spending via their credit card bills, too. Notice Barina's dropped off the map - I wonder if this is because of the new model changeover in Korea. Due here in a month IIRC. I hope the Cappy's coming from Thailand isn't holding back Rodeo production, although they appear stable for sales.

The Barina sold about 920 for January, just outside the top 30 and down on it's average 1000 per month, but so was everything else.

As everyone is saying January is an unusual month.

Captiva had another great month. It's share of the medium SUV segment must have been way up for the month.

Forget the "Premium Group" rubbish. Holden get your eye on the ball and go after the midsize market. You can introduce as many weird imported SUV's and supposedly Luxury cars as you want, but they are not going to arrest shrinking market share, because you do not have a good Midsize fighter in the lineup.

Corolla tops Commodore - no surprise a small car with a reputation for reliability & economy that is $15000 cheaper sells more units - Commodore will never compete head to head it's apples & oranges. Holden needs a good car in the same market right now they don't have and are looking in the wrong country for a competitor.

That 'weird' import SUV is selling quite well, and certainly didn't cost much investement wise compared to what a homegrown Australian model would have... but yes, you are right on the midsize front. If there remains an incredible demand for the Commodore even with gas prices creeping ever upwards, I have to believe a smaller Torana (but in the same spirit as the wonderful, new, class-leading Commodore) would be a massive hit.

While I don't know the Australian market, I also have to believe you're right about the push for a premium (aka Cadillac) brand in Australia. There's a big hole between the Commodore and the Astra, made worse by the fact that the Astra isn't a big seller... and neither is anything below it. Actually, that hole is massive, as the Viva and Barina aren't selling either. They need to shore up Holdens small cars before they worry about a new low-volume (albeit likely high profit).

No not at all. its novelty factor is starting to wear already. The rest of your assessment is spot on. A case of not doing well what Holden did in the past with it's large size car and the Torana to fill the midrange void.

More like unfortunately a gaping Chasm. This situation has been made worse by the lack of a locally built altenative. The buyers distate for the Korean experiement is shown by the plummeting sales for the Barina, Viva etc. The Captiva appears to be holding its position, but still not doing very well. The Commodore and VE ute are the only performers in the whole Holden and Premium Groups Lineup.

Re: Australian & New Zealand December 2008 Sales Results: Corolla Tops Commodore Agai

If Holden want BIG sales:

Commodore - done.
Diesel Commodore ute, and one tonner
same V6 diesel for the Rodeo.
local made Torana (Lancer size, rwd) - 4cyl starting from 19 grand, 3.2 V6 from 24 grand
local made, something Astra size, also rwd - 4cyl, start from 16
And the Opel Corsa to replace current Barina - start it at like, 12 and half grand... SOMEHOW .... build it here.

money doesnt come out of thin air, thats the onnnnly obstacle, lol
