Australian & New Zealand February 2008 Sales Results: YTD Toyota Leads Holden 15,916!

Australian February 2008 Car Sales Results

Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries
5 March 2008
www.fcai.com.au

Car market accelerates dispite interest rates.

FCAI Chief Executive Mr Andrew McKellar: "The February sales result shows that underlying demand from private buyers and business remains very robust."

Sales in both January and February have set records for those months, building on a record annual total of more than one million new cars in 2007.

"The February sales result is very pleasing for the automotive industry and shows that underlying demand from private buyers and business remains very robust, reflecting continued outstanding levels of vehicle affordability," said FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar.

The diversity of market trends was shown by the fact that small cars and large Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) were once again the main drivers of market growth in February.

Light car sales rose by 2,236 or 22.5 per cent, the Small car segment rose by 1,645 or 8.6 per cent and the SUV market grew by 3,365 vehicles or 22.6 per cent.

These gains were partially countered by declines in the Large car (down 2,488 or 19.9 per cent) and Medium car (down 383 or 5.1 per cent) segments.

"The volumes in the Large and Medium segments have been affected by the run-out of several key models. As new models become available in the coming months we would expect to see some turn-around," said Andrew McKellar.

Mr McKellar said a notable facet of the motor vehicle market last month was the large volume of vehicles being bought by businesses.

Sales of tool-of-trade Pick-up/cab-chassis 4x2 utilities rose by 1,184 or 22.0 per cent, while the Van segment rose by 602 or 39.1 per cent.

Toyota was the top-selling brand in February with 23.0 per cent of the market, ahead of Holden with 13.8 per cent and Ford with 10.5 per cent.

Year-to-date Toyota now leads Holden by 15,916 sales.

New Zealand February 2008 Car Sales Results

Motor Industry Association New Zealand
5 March 2008
www.mia.org.nz

New vehicles sales defy economic uncertainty.

Sales of new vehicles in New Zealand continue to run counter to the general economic direction and the falloff in the property market.

6175 new cars were registered in February, 6.6% ahead of February 2007 and more than any other February since 1989. Registrations of new commercial vehicles were even more impressive. 2004 were sold, 18.4% up on the same month last year, and a greater number than any February since 1984.

“This is an amazing start to the year,” said Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association. “After a record January, sales in February continued at an unabated pace on a seasonally adjusted basis. It’s clear that the new vehicle industry is showing more resilience than a number of other sectors.”

Toyota extended their lead as top selling brand, and second place Holden are establishing a margin over Ford in third place.

For individual models, Commodore took the lead over Corolla for the month of February, but Corolla still holds first position year to date. Once again, Suzuki Swift put on an impressive performance to consolidate third position year to date.

Re: Australian & New Zealand February 2008 Sales Results: YTD Toyota Leads Holden 15,

Just as it should be... Toyota out front and increasing the gap with second place... if they keep up their 8000 unit per month advantage over Holden they'll finish the year nearly 100,000 units ahead! Actually, I expect it to be more... with lower Aurion prices and the new Corolla picking up steam, lets hope for something closer to 200,000.

The issue is no longer toyota vs holden. that battle is long over. the current battle seems to be toyota vs holden + ford and how long before ford falls off the number 3 perch. both these scenarios are inevitable

True, Psionic Wibbly, but a sad state of affairs when everyone just folds to Toyota rather than putting up a fight. And you can bet that Toyota's at least as profitable in OZ as either Ford or Holden (just before someone uses the much quoted, often abused, and complete cop-out "as long as they're profitable").

I'll never understand the mentality of people that buy Toyotas in this day and age. They aren't superior, they look terrible, and for the most part they are boring to drive.

This post should go on the Toyota Nation website. It is in bad taste to post a post like this on a pro-General Motors website.

The battle is never over. I am glad Winston Churchill did not have this defeatist attitude when Germany pushed Great Britain out of France during WWII.

Never, never, never give up.

Holden needs more small and midsized options which are proven on fuel economy. The Astra is a great car bu t they need more. Epica is very economic for an inline 6 but its an outdated model. Holden need an overhaul of this division to shake up the market.

Ah no worries man... I'm just joking... I'm not a Toyota fan in the least. Still, the public has spoken... the love Toyota, and giving them their money.

Re: Australian & New Zealand February 2008 Sales Results: YTD Toyota Leads Holden 15,

Do you ever think that Toyota just buys some of its own cars to increase its market share? i mean who is actually buying all these Toyota all time. It always seems to increase. I know Toyota has enough cash that it probably wouldn't be an issue to buy a few thousand cars here and there... "Company cars"

Spot on. I have heard they give cash to Chinese Tourists to buy Corollas, then they give them back to the Toyota Dealers. It is all a Communist plot. Excuse me, I would like to write more but another Alien has just landed his UFO iin my backyard.

This is exactly what GM (and Ford and Chrysler) used to do in the US. They basically gave away cars to rental car agencies for free to keep up market share (and keep the unionized plants running).

Now GM and Ford have stopped, or all but stopped, doing this (not sure about Chrysler). Which is a good thing.

As for Toyota doing something similar in the Aussie market, I doubt it. Their sales are increasing planet-wide; they don't have to do this type of thing. If sales are low in one market, they can just divert sales to another country that is doing better-I've seen them do just that before in a very blatant fashion. They are much more global than GM is, in terms of them selling the same or similar cars in multiple markets, so they can adjust production and deliveries according to local demand easier. It's one of the reasons they are so profitable.
