Australian motor vehicle sales achieved an all time April record, with car buyers apparently still undeterred by recent rises in interest rates.

Official VFACTS figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show that a total of 84,061 cars, trucks and buses were sold last month: an increase of 11.2 per cent on April 2007.

"While the April result was boosted by the early timing of Easter, which fell in March, the underlying sales trend remains notably strong and resilient," said the Chief Executive of the FCAI, Andrew McKellar.

Year-to-date the car market is now up by 5.1 per cent on the all-time record year of 2007.

"Private motorists are buying cars at the same rate as last year (up 0.6 per cent YTD) and business purchases have risen by 12.6 per cent so far this year," he said.

"The FCAI forecast of one million vehicle sales this year remains firm," said Mr McKellar.

The main drivers of market growth last month were small cars, Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and Light Trucks.

In the Passenger Vehicle Market, the small car segment rose by 3603 vehicle or 24.0 per cent over April last year, while the medium car segment (up 755 or 11.4 per cent) and the light car segment (up 505 of 5.3 per cent) also contributed.

The Light Truck market grew by 3077 or 22.6 per cent, with the Pick-up/Cab-chassis (PU/CC) 4x4 and PU/CC 4x2 segments adding 1403 and 922 sales respectively.

The van segment also grew by 686 vehicles or 42.7 per cent.

Toyota remained the top-selling marque in April with 24.8 per cent of the market, followed by Holden with 12.1 per cent and Ford with 9.8 per cent.

So far this year Toyota leads the sales race with 81,062 from Holden with 44,037 and Ford with 34,533.

April new vehicle sales continue at record pace.

Despite the tightening economy having its effect on other sectors, new vehicle sales in April continued to set records. Although April is seasonally one of the slower months for the vehicle market, April 2008 (helped by the extra selling days arising from Easter falling in March) produced sales of 5551 new car sales and 2022 new commercial vehicles. New car sales were 13.6% higher than in April 2007 and new commercial vehicle sales were 16.8% ahead of the same month last year.

“New vehicle dealers continue to do very good business,” said Motor Industry Association CEO Perry Kerr. “This was the best April for new commercial vehicle sales for 26 years, and the best April for new car sales since 1990. The first four months of the year have produced 5.8% more new car sales than the same period last year, and for new commercial vehicle sales the increase is 10.7%.”

Toyota continued to lead the market for both cars and commercial vehicles, and for the month of April the surprise second place-getter for new car sales was Hyundai.

Corolla continues as the country’s favourite new car model on a year to date basis, although Commodore took the honours for the month of April.

Toyota HiLux Tops The Sales Charts In April

The Toyota HiLux has unseated the Holden Commodore and Toyota Corolla as the top selling vehicle in the country.

The Toyota HiLux utility was Australia’s top selling vehicle in April, toppling both the Toyota Corolla and the Holden Commodore.

It is the first time a utility vehicle has taken the mantle of Australia’s top seller.

Ute sales have grown strongly in the last couple of years, fuelled by the resource boom, a break in the drought in some rural areas and a trend towards utes being used as recreational, private vehicles.

Toyota’s divisional manager, national sales, Tony Cramb, says the 3814 HiLux sales were a result of improved supply of the vehicle from Thailand.

“The demand has always been there, it was really just a case of freeing up supply from the factory,” he says.

“The mining boom in Western Australia and Queensland has been a factor and we’ve also seen more demand from farmers in areas where the drought has broken,” he says.

There is also a growing demand from private buyers, particularly for diesel four-wheel-drive “double cab” models with five seats.

“A lot of people are customising their trucks like over in the US. The 4WD double cab diesel is really hot at the moment and a lot of that is lifestyle driven,” he says.

Sales of two-wheel-drive utes are up 15.9 per cent, while 4WD sales have grown by 5 per cent.

TRD Hilux

The Hilux is a compact truck very similar to the American Tacoma. Much of the reason it dominates the market is probably due to Australians not being too keen of large pickup trucks, thus resorting to a much smaller truck in the Hilux. Fleet sales also probably play a part.

Conversely in the U.S., the Big three automaker's full-size trucks dominate the sales charts partially due to fleet sales, but also because of many American's desire to buy much more vehicle than they will ever need (i.e. people who never tow or haul anything worthy of a full-size, but buy one after another anyway).

"Bigger is better" doesn't exactly fit into the Australian point of view when buying vehicles. And I for the life of me cannot figure out why so many people have that view here in America. To each his own, I guess.

The results is a bit skewed since they no longer count the commodore sedan and commodore ute as the one car. Both ute and sedan comes from the same plant, an increase in ute would decrease the sedan sales. Couple this with the Pontiac G8 and you would have a decrease in overall commodore sales in Australia. This is what holden wants, they dont want resale to plummet by over supplying and certainly dont want the commodore cheap and affordable image. Holden is now aiming for the higher end of town, hence all their Holden v BMW marketing.

Time for the new T370 pickups and SUVs to whip the Hilux and 4runner's butt.

And Holden obviously isn't serious about their small cars with the GMDAT re-badges.

If GM can put out some really fuel efficient and desirable small cars, like the euro market Focus and Fiesta, as well as put out extremely durable, reliable, and off road capable T370 Colorados and Trailblazers, then Holden would be pretty good.

The key is those world market small/midsized trucks and SUVs and the world market small cars. We can sell them here, too.

America buys full sized trucks because we have large toys and what not to tow around, but most could probalby make due with a smaller truck....if there were a desirable one out there. The Colorado cost too much for what you get. Only the Tacoma and Frontier are at the high quality level now. For those prices, they have to have the same quality as the full sizers and the T355 twins don't right now.

I'd love to see a 250 hp 23mpg crew cab colorado with the Silverado's dashboard. Maybe they will sell me one with a manual. That would be awesome.
