MotorTrend 2008 Fullsize SUV Comparison Test

MotorTrend has a comparison test of fullsize SUVs.

Finishing Order
1. Toyota Sequioa 5.7
2. Nissan Armada 5.6
3. Ford Expedition 5.4
4. Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3 - really complain about 4 spd auto

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...son/index.html

These guys seem to think more than 4 speeds would make the GM a better vehicle (as do I in the case of the Silverado/Sierra).

EDIT: waste of my time too and the market agrees with me, or at least 70% of them.

Re: MotorTrend 2008 Fullsize SUV Comparison Test

"The Tahoe entered this grouping as the second youngest to the all-new Sequoia; yet, despite its newness, it quickly impressed us as the most aged."

Am i missing something or did the Ford Expedition come out after the Tahoe? So the Sequoia would be the youngest followed by the Expedition then the Tahoe?

But i agree with the 4-speed thing.. GM really needs 6-speed autos across the board on their full-size trucks and SUVs!!!! And GM also needs something thats more powerful then the Toyota's 5.7L!

The market has had a lot more time to agree with you.

The Sequioa is starting to make me jealous.

If the public perception that GM only makes big SUVs is going to stay, at least make the best! But as it stands the GMT900s appear dissapointing.

If sales denoted awesomeness, then the Camry and Corolla are the bees-knees.

I was in a Sequioa at NAIAS and it made me want a Tahoe or Avalanche all the more. I found the interior uninviting, poorly laid out and the materials were ok, but not good. The doors sounded hollow when I opened and closed them. I did not like it at all. And it's fugly, but at least it doesn't have that stupid black thing at the top of the grille like the Turdra.

All you can ask for from a comparison is that they explain their rankings, and I think they did a pretty good job of that here. I'd flip the Ford and the Chevy personally in my final rankings, but the top two are correct in my mind.

There's just no excuse for the 4 speed. And no fuel efficient answer to Toyota's 5.7 - its quite disappointing. Also, no fold flat 3rd row. The other vehicles have issues too - but those 2 are huge.

Lack of a 6-speed (slowest and no more fuel efficient than the Toyota) and a horrible and inconvenient 3rd row are the biggest issues they had with it. I can't disagree.

its true, hard to justify that price point with 2 HUGE issues. They should get witht hte time and get IRS because next to noone is taking these offroad and that live axle cant compete.

Precisely. The quality and style are there, but those issues--moreso the awful packaging--only stick out more and more with time as big ute sales fall overall. It needs more grunt and/or better application of it, and a much more usable interior space. Then again, the Tahoe is always the shortest of all the big ute's, so even with a massive change underneath to change the seating, there wouldn't be much more room.

In a slowing market, you have to do as much as possible in as standout of a way...and there's still too much keeping it "old". But, then again, most Tahoe sales are to people who like the small size and the looks, and don't care much about the seating or lack of space behind their front seats.

Re: MotorTrend 2008 Fullsize SUV Comparison Test

The Tahoe gets better gas mileage than the Sequoia and (as tested) was $4,000 cheaper. It has a great highway ride at is quiet triple digit speeds So what did they not like about this 3+ ton, nine passanger SUV? Its 0-60 time was only 8.5 and the rear seats don't fold flat.

Little wonder they are in such disagreement with consumers.
