First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
Suzuki enters the crossover game with a much-improved XL-7 It may have a Japanese design and a Japanese name, but the 2007 Suzuki XL-7 is about as Japanese as a Yoshinoya beef bowl.
You see, although this fully redesigned version of Suzuki's midsize SUV is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 built in Japan, the engine was actually designed by General Motors. Suzuki builds it under license and adds its own computers, but it's essentially the same engine found under the hood of the ![]() ![]() ![]() It even has the GM corporative radio and steering wheel More at link |

GOD that thing is ugly! The interior is so boaring too! Well, at least it has the 3.6L DOHC V6, but the VUE will be getting that soon!

Re: First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
The hood seems to look exactly like the one from the Equinox/Torrent, same for the A-pillar. Definitely looks disctinctive. Not sure I like it though, interior is kinda boring.

Re: First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
It just baffles me beyond belief that the japenese version gets the American GM 3.6 engine and the American versions (nox and torrent) get the lesser in every way chinese 3.4's. It's almost as if GM is taunting the consumer to buy competitor products.

Re: First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
those headlamps are just funky looking. it's almost as if they forgot them in the original design and just found some lying around somewhere. terrible. i also find it funny that it only takes 7 more inches in length to add a whole 3rd row of seating. there must be no cargo space behind the raised 3rd row.

Re: First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
The exterior and interior are both very clean and modern on this thing.
Edmunds' description was a little sloppy - saying this is basically the same engine as is found in the G6; enthusiasts know exactly what they mean, but they should have stated that this engine was new for the G6 in 2007. Some ppl who've driven the G6 may be turned away from the XL-7 because of the motor. |

Re: First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
Wow nice, suzuki did a good job in putting the 3.6L in there. And that interior layout looks much nicer than its American smaller siblings.
The exterior is ok (Nox and Torrent are better looking), however it it still looks elegant. Everything else was executed perfectly. GM has all these great engines and transmissions and its sad that they cant seem to launch a car with them. They need to get their act together.

Re: First Drive: 2007 Suzuki XL-7
I think comparing it to the equinox is a little off because it seems to me this is a suzuki variant of the outlook, enclave, and acadia. Is this the theta platform that mgescuro mentions? That's why it has the 3.6 HF V-6...but not the 6 spd auto, but instead the 5 spd. Good thing there is not 3400 unit...but it was just as, or more powerful than the old 2.7L V6 if I remember.
Edit: Upon further analysis...I think I am wrong about the comparison to the acadia and the other two. What platfrom are those three on? Last edited by wtgkb8 : 08-09-2006 at 11:57 PM. |
