Re: Cnet reviews the Pontiac G8

At this point you cannot put a Navigation radio in the G8, the screen is to low and the NHTSA will not allow it, GM would have to redesign the whole dash board to accomadate the Nav screen. That is the only reason it is not provided as an option.

Um... cars ARE technology, and the G8 probably has the most advanced engineering of any vehicle in it's price class. If engineering doesn't count for tech, then they need to buy a freaking dictionary.

In fact I think may need to do just that. This is the company that named themselves cnet (computer network) network.

Re: Cnet reviews the Pontiac G8

We just baught a new black G8. I can say with the V6 you get pretty good mpg, but if you really step on it, it still has decent power. We wanted a GT but we could not find one and our lease was up. My friend has an LTZ malibu with the V6 and we both drove on a trip up I-75 last week and we ended up getting better mpg in our G8 then the malibu. If you drive it real fast (like you should with the g8 ever once in a while ) then of course your mpg wont be that great. But if you drive it normal its actually pretty good. Nav would have been nice but its no big deal, the aux input makes it easy for my my xm to hook in. Besides if you really need navigation, just hook up a $300 garmin and call it a day.

Is this true? Do you have a link? It's pretty interesting.

It's true. And I've had mine a week and love it.

If I were interested in the latest gadgets I would have looked at getting something else, like an Acura TL. Even if the G8 offered navigation I would not have forked over thousands to GM for it.

The G8 is a very straightforward, bread-and-butter muscle car. It's hardly sophisticated. It's a big tire smoking sledgehammer that's setup with being driven hard in mind. If that's what you want out of a car it works brilliantly IMO.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was in a collection of resume errors. The statement, taken from someone applying to be a magazine editor, said, "I am an excellent POOFREADER." (emphasis mine)

In the near-decade I spent in the newspaper industry, it's been my experience that photographers (who most often write their own suggested cutlines) don't know diddly about grammar, spelling or getting technical issues correct.

The problem is compounded by the fact that today's young paginators/designers just use the photo cutlines they're given and never even read them, let alone proofread them.

Heh it had a civic ex-l as similar for me, I guess they both have leather.

Clearly this isn't great journalism but I think there was some constructive criticism. While the Cnet geeks are over the top in their demands for more technology in the cabin it is a valid point. GM needs to stop trying to push people to On-Star navigation and offer the normal in dash GPS units. Regardless of how any of us personally feel about this stuff, consumers want it. GM's job is to give it to them and take their money for it. Pretty straightforward.
I disagree with what you're saying here.
Most of the c-net article was devoted to the in-dash LCD screen.
A car is much more than an LCD screen, people!
How did the car drive? "It drove well, but the LCD screen doesn't have NAV software."
How did the car perform in a straight line? "Well, the car has a huge engine of some sort, but We were mainly concerned with the LCD screen's iPOD connectivity, which wan't very good."
How does the car handle? "Pretty good, we guess. I mean, the owners manual said the car goes if you press the accelerator with your foot. It also said the car stops if you press the brake pedal with your foot. The car did both these things. But what we'd like to know was why don't they offer gigabits for the WebDash control.

No, I believe you guys that Nav isn't available. I should have been more clear. I was wondering if the NHTSA had a hand in Pontiac not being allowed to have NAV due the low mounting of the radio assembly.

Congrats on the new G8...I like them a lot!

If you reread the review, then you will see that it mentions the technology that you are referring to. If this were 1998, then I am sure that CNET's review would have been overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately for you and people who think like you, this is 2008. CNET reviewed the car in view of what is on the market in 2008. To have ignored the G8's omissions would have turned CNET into a shill for GM.

Re: Cnet reviews the Pontiac G8

The c-net review said the G8 isn't sophisticated, which raises a question. If the G8 had GM's hi-feature V6 engine w/DOHC, would the car then be "sophisticated"? And if so, that automatically implies c-net thinks the engine lacks sophistication.
Since when is one of the most revered V8's in the industry considered unsophisticated?
