Good for the Silverado but, the fact that the others are trucks is a new one to me.

Basically all SUVs count as trucks, and I guess that covers CUVs as well, no idea about minivans though

Isn't anything with a flat bed considered a "truck"?

I agree with most everyone else......I don't understand how you can take vehicles that are clearly based on cars and call them trucks. So what is a truck? By this standard, my father's 1979 Impala station wagon was clearly a truck. If that wasn't a truck, then please explain how that Mazda or that Honda minivan are trucks.

That '79 was BOF, V8. Way more "truck" DNA than what you see in those lightweights.

Nice of C&D to recognize the Silverado's greatness.

Having "5 Best Trucks" as a title makes sense. Saying "Best Van, Pickup, and 3 SUVs" would make a person a moron.
You may technically be right, but what is the point of the comparison? Is there really anyone cross-shopping these 5 vehicles?

You are absolutely correct. They need a separate category for car-based vehicles, most of the vehicles listed are station wagons.

A truck category should be:
* entry/midsize pickup on frame
* entry/midsize SUV on frame
* large SUV on frame
* full-sized pickup on frame
* heavy duty pickup

Then we'd have categories for all!

Re: Caranddriver.com: 2008 5Best Trucks

OMG some people...

Okay, the 5 best trucks is the non car version of the 10 best cars...you don't all go saying sports cars should be the top 10 cars do you? They aren't ranking them in order of the best truck, they are listing what they thought were the best of each category.

Just as there are different types of cars (sports car, family sedan, exotic etc) there are different types of trucks (mini van, truck, CUV, SUV etc).

Rather than call it the Truck of the year, Van of the year, etc etc, they called it their 5 best trucks...in that, if it isn't a car, it is by default a truck. You can narrow the definition of truck, just like you can narrow the definition of car.

POINT BEING: They aren't comparing the Rav-4 and the others to the Silverado, they are each the best in their respective class, just like they don't compare the 3 series with the Corvette in their 10 best cars segment..

I shouldn't have to point this out.

Re: Caranddriver.com: 2008 5Best Trucks

with insurance, are CUV's counted as a truck/suv, or a tall wagon? im sure that is why all these vehicles are in this group because they are labeled as trucks.

Re: Caranddriver.com: 2008 5Best Trucks

They should change the name to 4 best crossovers and have a seperate contest called 1 best trucks, where the fundamentally superior wins.

Re: Caranddriver.com: 2008 5Best Trucks

Car and Driver has been doing these for at least 7 years. The Cadillac SRX won Best Luxury SUV for three of them. They posted that on THIS SITE each year. That's not a "truck".

Every person who posted "those aren't trucks" must either not have ever read "Car and Driver", are new to this site, or both.

Re: Caranddriver.com: 2008 5Best Trucks

how many more people are going to say "those aren't trucks"? get over it. truck is the term used to classify them. they're not cars, even though some are car based. the PT Cruiser falls into the truck category too, if you want to really get down to it. utility vehicles, pickups, vans, and the like all fall into the truck category. get over it, it's 2008 not 1950.

these vehicles all advance their respective categories, and it's not a bad 5 best. i think i'd like to have seen a Lambda make it onto that list though. it's pretty hard to beat the Enclave in most respects. it's luxurious, performs reasonably well (it's a large SUV, it's not going to handle like a Miata folks!), it's put together very well using quality materials, and rides and drives very nicely. how did it miss the list?
