Seoul Motor Show 2007: GM Daewoo Models

Source: http://www.maxwatson.com/blog/2007/0...show_2007.html

Update: Blog owner Max Watson has responded to our site's attention with more GM Daewoo-related photos, see below!

4/5/07

The 6th annual Seoul Motor Show 2007 will be open to the public April 6th through the 15th at KINTEX in Ilsan. Not limited to merely Domestic makes, the show also hosts many of the import brands you might see on the streets in Korea.

I've got 4gb of photos and this is just the beginning. Come back again tomorrow to see some shots focusing on the models.

Spokespeople from several auto manufacturers announced that the 2007 show would have fewer sexy models than the previous year's show in Busan.

Despite the reduction in models, there are more than enough in attendence.

GM-Daewoo showed off the G2X again. It's already being sold in Europe by GM-Opel in America it's known as the Saturn Sky. I recently read that they'll be assembling these in America and importing about 500 models this year. Hopefully the price stays low, as I'd like one.

New Photos, thanks Max!:

Two Toscas - one possibly the "Aero" model with lip kit on the right.

Kalos-Gentra/5-door Aveo, looks like a Rally car with roll cage, or perhaps something else with those tires:

Gentra/New Aveo, also a race car setup

Tosca shot from GMI Member Jeff G.T.:

Daewoo sedan, though undoubtedly good, looks terrible and bland - I wouldn't even recognise it as a Daewoo, and that's saying something...

Except in the UK because GM figured they could lose that rather HUGE market completely to the TT, Z4 and Boxster. Well done GM - a great decision that was. I shall so die laughing when the next GM roadster comes to the UK and completely flops!

Pillocks.

GM didn't take the time to slowly massage the idea that Daewoo can be a full size luxury car maker into people's heads. Instead, it just dumps a foreign-designed product into its lineup and calls it a day. There's nothing Daewoo about that car.

Hyundai actually took the time (years and years) to build itself up. Hyundai selling a RWD luxury sedan? I wouldn't have a hard time believing that. Hyundai has been consistently building bigger and better products over the decade.

But... Daewoo?

As far as I know, Daewoo has had a luxury sedan on the Korean market in the past, called the Chairman. It basically looked like a Mercedes-Benz E- or S-Class clone, as I assume they used M-B components. The Holden-based sedan is much better-looking than the Chairman, IMO.

How huge is the market? I suspect they could sell a whole lot more than 500 G2X's in Korea if they wanted... the work that goes into flipping a car to right had drive has to be monstrous and very expensive... I honestly can't blame them too much for pushing the kapp conmvertibles in markets that are left hand drive, instead of trying to crack into low-volume markets with an already low-volume car.

I love how the ladies are dressed to match the cars... young and fresh for the G2X, classy and elegant for the Holden sedan (I forget the name already... man I hate that naming scheme!), sexy and sassy for the WTCC Ultra, and tailored and sharp for the Cadillac. And beautiful to boot!

The folks who put on the US auto shows certainly have much to learn from their Asian counterparts!

My mistake. The Chairman is a product of Ssyangyong, which used to be owned by Daewoo, and used Mercedes-Benz components by license.

Compare to the old Daewoo-built Magnus (Verona, Epica), which was at one time a big "bland" (or classy and conservative depending on your view) Daewoo:
