Re: NYIAS 08: 2010 Pontiac G8 Sport Truck

I like the way the clip has been changed to make it a Pontiac. The El Camino name is the domain of Chevy, and there is no reason for that to change. Besides, if the angle is to market this vehicle within the G8 line, it needs to be consistent with that and find its own name. I do like G8 Ute, though.

It's great we are finally getting this in NA, but it seems like we have been teased for a long time. Good to see Pontiac getting some more performance RWD DNA in a quirky package

With far too much Spanish being spoken in the USA by those who refuse to learn English, "El Camino" would offend many buyers. Spanish language names stopped sounding exotic several decades ago.

That's pretty cool. It just sucks that it's coming at a time when gas is $3.50 a gallon and the dollar sucks.

Hi everyone. Just joined the site. I also went to the Pontiac website right after the contest started and I chose Yuma. It is a Native American indian word meaning chiefs son.

Bah...

I haven't read the whole thread, nor will I, but I will give my thoughts:

Pontiac is the excitement division, and while I appluad GM/Pontiac for green-lighting the G8, I strongly believe that a two-seat "mini-pick-up" should not be in the line-up. Pontiac should have brought the wagon version over, offering buyers the flexibility of passengers and/or cargo. Yeah, wagons don't sell well in America (Mazda killed the 6 wagon), but who will buy these? (Yes, I know some here said they would, but we here represent an incredibly small portion of the public). This Sport Truck will probably sell in even lower numbers.

Actually since it doesn't have the stigma of a wagon there is more likely to be a stronger niche of people who will buy the ST.

Unless you assume "normal" people would buy a G8 Wagon, which I don't think they would.

Holden ute to conquer USA | carsguide.com.au
Contains an interesting comment regarding the meaning of the word "ute" in America - I wonder how many Americans knew this? In its favour for use in the US I have certainly heard the word Utility as in Sports Utility Vehicle/truck shortened to (Sports) Ute in American mags; that's the same way we got it except the full name was Coupe (and very rarely Roadster) Utility.

Welcome to GM Inside News! I suspect El Camino will win the contest, by virtue of the large amount of people going for one name. I hope they give out voting results for the individual names, that would be really cool to see. I like them involving people like this though, it'll pay off.

Not many I would venture, although more in Utah I would think. On a side note, the nickname for my Junior High School was and still is the Utes. I think this old Ute needs a new Ute.

Speculation on a North American export opportunity for the Aussie Ute first surfaced at the Detroit Motor Show in 2002.

That plan never eventuated but with the free trade agreement removing the 20 per cent tariff which had hindered the Ute previously GM decided to green-light the Pontiac program.
Whoa! Twenty percent tariff?!? No wonder we haven't had anything from Holden before. I wonder if the Free Trade Agreement went into effect before the GTOs were imported? Either way, it doesn't matter now. I can't wait for the Utes to arrive.

Re: NYIAS 08: 2010 Pontiac G8 Sport Truck

I won't win any creativity or cuteness awards, but what about Pontiac Car-Truck? It makes it clear that it is both. Ute does not mean anything to most people in the USA, but it seems that Pontiac Car-Truck would immediately get people thinking about how they need the best attributes of both.

Animal names (Impala, Cougar, Marlin, Barracuda, Falcon, Hornet, Etc.) seem out of style, and more like names for high school sports teams.

City or vacation destination names (Biscayne, Catalina, New Yorker) also are out of date.

Meaningless letters and numbers (G8, CTS, MKX) are completely confusing and so silly as to be offensive.

Roughy-toughy mountain man names (Explorer, Expedition, Trailblazer, Mountaineer) might have helped to sell a few body-on frame wagons which were never, ever driven on a gravel road, much less off road, but they too are fast becoming outdated.

Diplomatic or political rank names (Ambassador, Diplomat, Senator) won't work now.
