Re: NYIAS 08: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Looks great. Very nice job Hyundai. Everyone will laugh, but I think that Ford, Dodge and Chevy should all be worried about the competition that this will put up for the public's pony car dollars.

That is just guessing. I would be willing to bet that it will be much higher than that since they will still have the smaller, FWD Tiburon to slot in below the Genesis coupe.

But hey, Toyota would never have the balls to bring out a rwd V8. Bravo to Hyundai. It's looks like an Infinity G coupe though. It's tasteful enough.

A fully loaded Tib barely touches 21K, and Hyundai even said in the press release that they are aiming for 20K for the 4 cyl. Granted it wont have the Brembo brakes, pushbutton-start or the leather seats at that price, but still its a good deal.

The Mustang is looking dated every day, especially the V6 model.

Looks great in that picture ConceptVBS! I'm sorry, but I could convince myself to buy one if the price is right. The only thing I don't like is the side window, but I could live with it.

Overall width: 1865 mm / 73.4 inches
Overall height: 1380 mm / 54.3 inches
Wheels: 18-inch or 19-inch five-spoke
Engine types: 3.8-liter V6 or 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo
Est. horsepower V6: 306 @ 6,000 rpm (regular fuel)

Block & head materials: aluminum for both engines
Valvetrain: DOHC for both engines
Valve timing: continuously variable valve timing for both engines (Dual for 2.0t)
Estimated 0-60 mph V6: under 6 seconds
Transmission types: 6-speed manual, 5-speed automatic (4-cylinder) or 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic (V6)

Limited slip differential (Optional)
Est. top speed: 149 mph (V6), 137 mph (2.0t)
Base curb weight: 3549 lbs. (V6); 3439 lbs. (4-cylinder)

Those are the specs, supposedly will start at 19-20K. It's a damn good deal with the base engine, but the V6.....not so impressive (starts at 25-26k area).

And I'm surprised no one has mentioned the push button start on the car, while most of you guys will cry to no end about it on the Camaro.

Why do you think the V6 is not impressive at 25-26k? The only other 300 horsepower RWD coupe at that price is the Mustang GT, and this will weigh about the same, offer an extra gear in either transmission plus stability control and side curtain airbags (both of which the Mustang lacks), plus of course the optional Brembo brakes, limited slip differential, and 19 wheels.

The real question, of course, is how it drives, because according to basically every major automotive magazine and journalist, Hyundai and Kia have yet to make a fun-to-drive car for North America.

Yeah but this is a Lexus. Not a Toyota. I know it's the same thing but you know what I mean. It would ruin their "green" image and it's too fun for them anyways. Yota should at least use turbos.

Re: NYIAS 08: 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

So where does this fit into their lineup? The sedan and coupe I mean? They just brought out the Azera not too long ago and I doubt they would kill the Sonata. Is the Tiberon dead? I really thought that Genesis would of been their new luxury brand and these cars would go upscale. I'm confused what Hyuandai is trying to do.

Tiburon is quite a bit smaller than this. Basically Tiburon = Cobalt SS and Genesis Coupe = Camaro, I'd say. I don't think they'll be doing a new luxury brand anytime soon... so the Genesis sits atop of the Hyundai brand as their large luxury car. If Sonata = Malibu and Azera = Impala, I guess Genesis = Lucerne, for which Chevrolet has no equivalent (you know, because GM has 100 brands).

it looks made for body kits.

in that sense it'll do fine, but with the news about the camaro and new stang, I doubt there will be too many cross shopping this.

Or maybe it's for people who:

-Don't like American cars
-Want RWD
-Want a 4-cylinder turbo
-Want Brembo brakes
-Want an LSD
-Want a 6-speed manual, or 5-speed/6-speed auto
-Aren't concerned about image
-Don't want to spend more than $25K

If Chevy does make a Camaro with the 2.0L turbo, I doubt it'll be able to compete with this. If you want to be rational about it instead of dismissing it as an import in general or Hyundai in particular, you'll see that this car's feature/price ratio is nothing short of game-changing. This is the sort of car people have been asking for for YEARS. It just so happens that Hyundai was the one manufacturer who answered the call. Assuming the 4-cylinder turbo starts at $20K, the factory Brembo and LSD package shouldn't be more than a couple thousand dollars. The next closest thing would be a 350Z with Brembos and LSD...for about $10K more.

People who criticize this car are deluding themselves. This is LEAGUES better than the base Challenger, Mustang, or Camaro (4-cylinder) will be.

I think you've gone from one extreme to the other. A lot of people here are convinced this car will be garbage, no matter what the reality is.

But you sound convinced it will be surprisingly good for its price. That has yet to be proven too.

I do think it's an impressive package on paper. [EDIT] But for example, the 2008 CTS and G8 are getting good reviews for handling, and Hyundai has never managed that. It's possible that the Genesis coupe would beat a Camaro turbo in every category except the most important one for an inexpensive sport coupe: driving experience.

Fair enough, the handling may not be phenomenal, but then again, I don't think anyone would expect the Genesis, Camaro, Challenger, or Mustang to offer world-class handling for under $30K. But I think it's safe to assume that the handling will be more than adequate for its class and price tag.

Track-tuned suspension, LSD, and staggered wheel/tire/Brembo package
will be optional on both models. I assume they will "bundle" all those features into one "sport" package.

Also, judging from the official Genesis Coupe minisite, both versions will have optional HIDs and autodimming mirrors with Homelink. Those are two VERY nice touches, I think, in a car like this. The V6 will even have a backup warning system available. These luxury/convenience features, including an available upgraded sound system, leather, etc. etc., will probably be available "bundled" together as a "premium" package.

So if I had to guess, I'd say they'll have two packages available ("sport" and "premium"), in addition to the base cars. So again, if I had to guess, a completely loaded 4-cylinder with both packages would be close to $26K, and a similarly loaded V6 would be about $31K. I think that's extremely compelling.
