NAIAS 2008 Coverage Explained

NAIAS 2008 Coverage Explained

With NAIAS 2008 quickly approaching and coverage already started, let my explain how GMI is going to do things this year.

Coverage will come as it is released. It appears that this year all of the auto makers are keeping quiet regarding what and when things will be released at the show.

 • GM will be making some sort of NAIAS announcement Thursday, January 10, at 1:00 P.M. EST.
 • Ford will be revealing the all-new 2009 F-150, photos will be released January 13, at 12:00 A.M.
 • GM will reveal most of their NAIAS 08 offerings January 14, at 12:01 A.M.
GMI WILL be covering all of the above and more! We will get them up ASAP!

Photos. For all GM products, most of Ford's, and some of Chryslers, we will upload our own photos in the GMI Gallery. You may go to the NAIAS 2008 album to access the high-resolution photos.
Stay tuned to GMI for the latest from NAIAS 2008! We are striving to bring the best coverage possible!

Re: NAIAS 2008 Coverage Explained

GM introduced the Total Value Promise and cut MSRP's and lowered dealer profit margins January 10, 2006. With the half percent increase I guess that is not the case. Longer bumper to bumper would be awesome.

What are we doing to make sure the whole site doesn't go down with the crush of traffic? It's been getting progressively worse with each auto show and recently searching and other key features don't work at all do to high server loads.

^^^+1.

I can't even get on GMI for a couple (like 3) LA AS days at a time and I always get high server load or the server is busy please try again later, so seriously its like, get on at 1am in the morning or don't go on GMI. I don't like it AT ALL. I'm on here almost daily, and as a daily user, its very disappointing that when all the 'fun stuff' comes up, I can't even LOOK at it, much less post!

Where is Old Dood when you need him? cough paypal cough

Also, I remember hearing someone suggest not allowing non-registered users going to many areas beyond the front page? Is it possible to institute something like that?

Do you NOT want new registered users? That is a pet peve of mine. If I "lurk" at a site and not post, even if I'm a registered user, it's a PITA to me to have to either register or sign in. Look how many posts I have here in relation to how long I've been a member and maybe you'll understand what I'm talking about. I've just felt a little more chatty lately. There is another GM site that's not as good, (you all know which one) and if it's something good they want you to log in. I just leave and either come here or Autoblog. In fact, I rarely go there anymore. Just my .02.

We're working on getting the new server. There is a good chance we will have it before the high-traffic portions of NAIAS begin.

With Cookies once you log in you never worry about it. Besides you can't search, look at member profiles, or do a bunch of other stuff unless you sign in.

Certian forums should be registration only, the OTHER GM site does this (I have an account there just to read things from time to time, I never post).

If you don't like that then GMi should do what corvetteforum does, have supporting members who pay a yearly fee.

Finances is not the problem with getting a new server, so having supporting members will not get a server faster.

As I said, there is still a good chance we'll have the new one before the 13th.

I almost never log in myself. I stay logged in. Just sign up, sign in and have your computer save the settings/cookies.

IMO if someone wants to look at everything they should be registered.

I want people to join of course! I also want people to contribute to the site or not have use to all its features, especially when I 'contribute' and look at my post count next to the time I've been here, and I'm far from retirement no less, . Like others have said, if you have cookies and whatnot, its FINE and one time login and then save your setting and you NEVER have to login again, this is what I have.

I hope so! Thank you very much, all of us users appreciate your and other moderator's/contributors/Branden's hard work! We really do, especially those of us who contribute on a daily basis to make this site great

Re: NAIAS 2008 Coverage Explained

We are working on a new server. Will it be done by NAIAS...I cannot promise that. Quite honestly the current server can handle the load 98% of the time. The problem is, the load around NAIAS is so high you are basically paying for a sever that costs twice as much to only use the capability 3 days a year. We are not talking cheap either...more than most peoples car payments. That being said, we are commited to providing service at all times, and we will work towards the best solution possible. The issue is not money honestly...it is more a matter of getting everything lined up to move a site this big and not disrupt service.

One of the biggest issues we have is that Yahoo's slurp spider likes to open up 100+ sessions randomly..which bogs the site down. We have had success in the past using the robots.txt file to control that which has bought some time with this server. We have looked at making it so guests can't view during peak times, but that just makes things worse because everyone then starts registering. Either way, it will be worked out.

Thanks Brandon. I appreciate the extra effort that is being taken. I even have experienced problems getting in during the NAIAS, even though I'm seven time zones away from
the east coast, and view during the middle of the night when almost everyone in the USA
is sleeping.
