    NAIAS 09: 2010 ECOTEC 2.4l SIDI

    NAIAS 09: 2010 ECOTEC 2.4L SIDI
The first of many direct-injected 4-cylinders from GM.
    www.gminsidenews.com
    December 21, 2008

Short Take: This is the first mainstream, non-turbo four-cylinder ECOTEC to get direct injection. It's making it's debut on the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox with 182 HP and 30 MPG on the highway. Expect this engine to make it's way to more applications in the future. Unfortunately GMI can confirm that the new DI engine will NOT be making it's way to the 2010 Malibu....at least not as of yet. Just to erase any potential speculation...

    2.4L DI Details

What it's in: So far just the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and 2010 GMC Terrain; no other models are confirmed.

The new 2.4L DI engine delivers an estimated 180 horsepower (134 kW) @ 6700 rpm and 172 lb.-ft. of torque (232 Nm) @4900 rpm. It uses technology based on GM’s other four-cylinder direct injection applications, but with unique features designed for its specific application. This includes an 11.4:1 compression ratio that helps build power, slightly dished pistons that increase combustion efficiency and injectors with an application-specific flow rate.

GM benchmarked the best fuel system and noise attenuation products to provide customers with quiet operation.

I hope these new Engines are enough to turn things around, GM is starting to catch up to Ford, but of course we still dont have the press release of new Ford engines for Naias so well have to wait. One thing for sure, Chysler is so far behind the times, i dont see how they can live.

Good to see 30 mpg in the Nox but 182 HP is a bit of a disappointment, due to Lutz saying it would be in the 200-230 range. Hopefully this is a low tune and they are able to increase it in future applications.

Catching up with Ford? Not in powertrains. Ford needs to catch up to GM.

Does Ford have any DI engines on the market now? Not to my knowledge. 10% of GM's wrold-wide volume will have a DI engine in 2009.

RL,i think it is tuned for fuel economy, not power. im sure it could get to 210 if they tuned it for power

GM has had a world-class, award-winning DI turbo 4-cylinder for almost two years. They have a ton more in development. Ford is just slapping a marketing term to theirs.

Umm, the Focus and Mazda3 get the 2.0 DI. The Focus coming with standard 6 speeds! Also the 3.7 DI will be at Detroit along with 3.5 EB which has DI. 2.0 EB has DI. 1.6 EB will have DI, and the Fox EB will have DI.

I see a lot of "will haves" in that post.

And e-Flex is not profitable and wont come out til summer of 2010. Ford just decided not to release their golden egg so far before so competitors know whats coming.

I don't care what's coming. If you want to discuss that, lets; because I'm here to tell you that there isn't a new engine coming out of GM that does NOT have DI.

Not only are they ADDING DI engines, they are phasing out the SFI/MFI versions just as quickly.

So what Ford can I buy TODAY with DI? I can think of 10 GM models with DI that I can go buy today.

That would be correct. And I doubt that will be changing based on what GM has coming.
