Re: NAIAS 08: VW Passat CC

wow- I love the Alfa Romeo-esque seats just dont think I can get past the VW emblem though. Maybe after a rough 12 month initial depreciation I could justufy the cash expense for an overpriced mainstream brand. At $29K for a 12 month old 12K trade-in I'd take this VW over a new on the lot Malibu LTZ

Ouch is right. Let me try to decide... CTS or Passat... CTS or Passat. I'll take the CTS thank you very much.

Re: NAIAS 08: VW Passat CC

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice... As somebody already observed, the front end seems to be too "wide", which emphasizes the already pronounced transverse-FWD issues (somehow VW can't get it right, Passat's been having this problem for many years now), but the rest is realy sweet. Interior is spot-on - VW finally came up with an attractive steering wheel! GM should reverse-engineer the interior ASAP for a G6 update!

As to marketing issues:
1. With VW obsessed with naming every other version of their vehicles something else (Eos anyone?), keeping the Passat moniker seems really weird to me and will confuse rather than help. Some people in this thread already think it is a new Passat (whereas it is a new model meant to slot above the current Passat). There is much potential in either reviving a classic name (Quantum?) or coming up with a new one here.

2. Not an Audi - for sure it is not, Audis continue to go longitudinal, with the new A4/S4 platform combining the benefits of FWD and RWD. The Passat platform is actually a longer Golf platform (take note, GM!), so this is a vastly different car. That said, why the A4 got a rather formal roofline and the VW got a CC is rather strange...

3. OTOH, a "cheapo" CLS might be a good way to carve yet another niche in the entry-level-luxury market (while VW's might come accross as overprices, the CLS is VERY expensive).

4. VW's "sporty" brand is supposedly to get a Passat-sized car - what is its value proposition going to be then?

Anyway, GM should better take note. With at least 5 Epsilon cars, they need to find ways to differentiate and cover the most bases (rather than the most Enterprise lots). That said, Insignia's (talk about bad brand management) roofline looks like the rear headroom was cancelled too. The question is, though, where are people buying Vectras supposed to go?

Re: NAIAS 08: VW Passat CC

months of announcing production of a jaw-dropping CLS fighter and all we see is a Passat with softer body lines. I would take the new A4,A5 or CTS over this any time.

Looks good. The front end seems to be missing something, but overall, much nicer then the current gen.

Re: NAIAS 08: VW Passat CC

I love it, but with the added size(and probably price), I think it will need a little more than the 3.6 V6. Would be cool to see the 4.2 V8 in it!
