At least a few of us get it. It's a sexy vehicle with the added utility of the hatchback.

This car will look at home in affluent areas like White Plains, NY and Greenwich, CT.

You can thank GM for inspring that "stupid decklid/liftgate combination" over 30 years ago.

Except the swinging door on the Chevy was actually useful, as it was the only easy way to get in and out of the rear-facing 3rd row seat ("the puke seat" as we called in on my parent's Caprice wagon). The BMW doesn't have a 3rd row of seats. Also note that on the Chevy, there's only one actual door there - the glass sides down into the door. On the BMW, there's two separate hinges mechanisms (like on a modern SUV).

The alternative to the Chevy design was to have a hatch that swung upwards or a tailgate that swings downwards. The former made it tricky to exit the vehicle from that 3rd row without hitting your head. The latter made for an almost "diving board" like jump. Both of these setups make it more difficult to open up the door from the inside as well.

Without the 3rd row of seats, the BMW's double hatch is somewhat superfluous - especially since a single large powered hatch is probably what most buyers would want anyway.

I'm not impressed at all. I was impressed with Holdens Torana concept!! That was a hatch worth building. This things looks like a giant Subaru. BMW is spending too much time complicating their designs. BMW was famous for making a handsome car with simple clean lines. The interiors had sporty seats and easy to read gauges. What the frak is with that interior?

I agree that adding a hatch adds to the utility of the vehicle, but that extra little flip-up door doesn't at all. Not one bit. You basically have to be bent over in two to reach anything. I'm all for new ideas, like the much better Skoda hatch / trunk idea, or the Envoy XUV, or the Avalanche, but this is just plain foolishness.

PAS - the redefinition of awkward.

From the side this "thing" reminds me of an old Elantra.

The only redeeming quality it has is a large enough hatch opening to actually get something bulky into the "trunk". So many of today's sedans with psuedo fastback styling have such a small and unusable trunk opening - no matter how large the trunk itself.

Superb does it much better. The access porthole is just a trick for the sake of being tricky.
