Re: Geneva '09: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Concept(PAS)

Wow....a 5 door BMW 5 series....interesting...

I saw an X6 in the wild for the first time yesterday and I think it looks better than this 5 series....YMMV.

I like it, the design isn't too bad, all it needs if for the grill to be downsized. Now lets see it in sedan form.

It (STS) already was pretty good, just needs the Chinese SLS interior.... This proves why GM should keep and move Pontiac up market, could certainly steal BMW's traditional buyers... and probably why Bangle left the industry!

I see a silver X6 around where i live/work, there really isnt anything special about it. I don't know if i would go so far as to call it an appliance but I dont see a need for it. Given its the only one I have seen maybe other people think that as well.

Now the only Z4 Coupe I have seen in the wild, I was liking it, it got my attention easily, wasnt painful to look it and i love the shape.

I didn't read the other posts, but this looks like a lowered X6. Lame. I wish BMWs were "boring" like they were in the '90s.

I guess I'm getting out of touch with the styling trends. When things like this are consider pretty, new Audis aren't called to the carpet for their stupid looking grills, and the Pontiac G8 is called bland, I guess I have to say I'm out of sync. Either that or I have not chugged the kool aid.

Mark
I hear ya, although I can tolerate the Audi horse collar grille. The 3-Series is not as good looking as it used to be, but again, I find most redesigns to be crappier than the ones that came before. I don't mind the 3, but the current 5 is pretty lame. At least the new 7 looks good.

Until they start making their cars look normal again, I'm one of the lost BMW faithful. They had their best looks during the 60s (the Neue Klasse and what became the 2002) to the early 2000s, then lost it.

This shows you that people buy just for the badge, and not the driving experience.

More importantly...why is BMW stealing 1958 Buick Super design cues, wasn't part of the 67 GTO's tag line enough?

Re: Geneva '09: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Concept(PAS)

What is the point of the stupid decklid/liftgate combination? The tailgate is idiotic.

Quote:
• The BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo is highly versatile: a flexible
interior comprising the rear seats, the partition wall wall, and the luggage
compartment allows the adjustment of the interior individually to personal
requirements - from a separate luggage compartment, like in a sedan, all
the way to a loading capacity of 1,650 litres or almost 58 cubic feet with the
rear seats folded down. This flexibility is rounded off by a two-piece tailgate
with separate openings for additional convenience

Re: Geneva '09: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Concept(PAS)

That's a lot of cost, complexity, and weight to add to a vehicle to prevent the occasional cool breeze from getting into the passenger compartment when the liftgate is opened.

Also, looks like it is really hard to reach any distance into the trunk area w/o opening the liftgate, anyway.

Re: Geneva '09: BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Concept(PAS)

I don't get it. That weird trunk opening is absolutely useless. I could see the advantage of having a regular sedan with a standard hinging trunk AND a hatch function (like the Skoda concept from a while back), but that is absolutely useless.
