Chevrolet HHR Wins SEMA's "Best SUV Design" with over 60% of Votes

Chevrolet HHR Wins SEMA SUV Design Award
SEMA’s Awards Program Chooses the Chevrolet HHR in Best SUV Category

Chevrolet’s retro-style HHR was recognized this week as the most accessory-friendly SUV at the 2005 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, capturing one of three SEMA Vehicle Design Awards and joining a prestigious list of past winners.

"The aftermarket will have a heyday with this SUV, and die-hard GM fans now have their own little HHR cruiser to kick out,” said David M. Gordon, western regional sales manager for Hamsar Diversco, Inc., adding that the "retro-looking multi-use HHR lends itself to many different styling directions.”

Those included in the Vehicle Design Awards selection process were SEMA member companies who regularly participate in technology sharing programs; the Chevrolet HHR received more than 60 percent of the votes.

"Our manufacturing members that participate in this program had early access to this vehicle and found the design and engineering lends itself to customer personalization,” said Carl Sheffer, Vice President of OEM Relations for SEMA. "Based on feedback from the OEMs, we are having a positive impact on the design and marketing of future vehicles.”

Same here ('cept the part about being a truck guy). My next daily driver will probably be an HHR. Fuel economy, styling, utility, MP3 capability in the stereo, plastic lined cargo area, I like it all. A good car to compliment my do-it-all but slightly thirsty Safari AWD.

The PT Cruiser has "truck" plates last I saw. Not to mention that Scion xB on the cover of Mini-Truckin' magazine a while back.... :p

Load flat floor just like the Magnum, I think that is kinda what started all of this 'its a truck because the seats fold down' classifications.

Yes, the HHR is classified as a truck, just like the XB, PT cruiser, and some of the Subarus. Nice way to get the fuel economy of the truck fleet up for any automaker, taking advantage of what seems like loopholes. It is odd when looking at GM's monthly sales, since it is also listed with the big trucks.

Interesting that on Chevy's own website...they list the HHR under both 'cars' and 'suvs'....not 'trucks'.

Re: Chevrolet HHR Wins SEMA's "Best SUV Design" with over 60% of Votes

GM is cleaning house at SEMA. The designs I was most impressed with were the ones that made it look not-retro, which is a very good thing in terms of staying power. This is good fuel to keep the HHR sales on pace. Chevy needs to advertise to potential of the HHR.

I drove a HHR at the Autoshow In Motion day before yesterday and I must say I was very impressed with it.. It was spunky, had lots of space and the fit and finish was top notch. This made the Corolla they had nearby for testing look like the pile it was! Most of the GM offerings were very impressive (the updated two tone malibu interior looked great soft to the touch dash and all!!!)

On the GM auto book it is called a utility vehicle. When we put a tag on it it does not get a truck tag. The Tahoe Trailblazer and Suburban do not get truck tags either. The HHR is built off of the Cobalt platform so I would call it a car...The body on frame Trailblazer Tahoe etc. I would call a truck. The Equinox is a "tall car."

Toyota is always showing how customizable the Scions are in their ads. I think Chevy needs to do the same thing...show the potential that the HHR has. Something like "HHR - make it uniquely yours."

The HHR is awesome to begin with and I love all the different ones they showed at SEMA, mainly though the one that looked like the Nomad.

Great...I love the HHR. It's neat fun and hip. Just what GM needs. And, not to mention a sales success. GM deserves things like this..way to go!
