Re: Beijing Preview: Roewe 550

I noticed it has Good Years on it. I wonder where they were made?

This car really is impressive, especially for a Chinese automaker. I'd like to see how it drives and feels.

The front seats look a little flat, and that rear armrest is too short.

It is built for the local marekt so it is about right. Chinese have very hard beds and seats so they will be expecting seats like that. I see it as being a device to contain cupholder and an ashtray rather than an armrest and I feel pretty confident that is how it will be used. I dont see anyone using an armrest as armrest (either here or in Australia for that matter). i often wonder why they there.

I gotta say, I'm impressed. Nice looking vehicle - doesn't look like something coming from China at all!

It is strange because there is a lot of good design work going on here, but not necessarily in cars. I see a lot of restaurant kitchen machinery that has been done with flair and is of local origin. I am sure that as the universities that have been created to cater especially for the motor industry start pumping out graduates you will see more inspriing designs. When that happens they will have to rely less on buying designs form overseas (Italdesign, PF etc). The 550 has a majority of English design in it I think - still the locals would still have to approve of it and the fact they have is in itself encouraging.

Their factory is up North China near the Yellow Sea (if your looking in an atlas its to the west of Korea) Liaoning Province probably DaLian City.

Most of the development was done by the former Ricardo 2010, currently SAIC/Roewe development in the UK. Unfortunately SAIC took NAC-MG too late for the former MG Rover dev centre to have something to say. The car rides on the SHORTENED 75 platform, btw.

The interior is rather impressive, Buick Excelle is surely feeling hot in its pants now... I actually would rather if SAIC could have had the Rover nameplate, it would make a nice "real" Rover -> except for the astoundingly awful front end (perhaps intended to be replaced by different variations for different markets, i.e. MG for export).

PS. The rear seat with this armrest look very Jetta to me, which is the best you can aim for in China.

Re: Beijing Preview: Roewe 550

I really like the look of this car. Even the "fatso" front end seems to bode well when viewed at front 3/4. It looks a little Passat/new Alfa 156. This is the type of export that can get instant cred for the chinese industry, whilst they wait for domestically developed platforms to catch up.

I think I'll take a course in mandarin.

It doesn't seem to be a bad looking car at all. However, if they were to sell it here, I don't care if they sell it for half the price of a comparable car, I won't buy it.

Anyone else notice that the center stack is a complete ripoff of BMW 3 and 5 Series, and the stereo is a ripoff of the Pontiac G8/Holden Commodore?
