It's strange that they would all pull out. Honda's probably just in it because they've gotten a minutia of press regarding their plant-towns in the US still providing jobs/etc.
I think it's less "the new unimportance", as our market is still huge and lucrative. Maybe it's like a team shutting down their playbook when they've got a big lead.

But realistically, it's probably just because they're all tightening their belts.

Toyota has been trying to undo GM for 1/2 a century, and now this might put the nail in the coffin.... but it's not polite to spit on the hands that feed you.

I do not suspect GM will go down with out a fight and neither will American's. Toyota may have the prius, but not all of America wants a prius MADE IN JAPAN from Cobalt shipped from Hamilton Ontario. There is still a segment of this economy that NEEDS a 3/4ton, 1 ton+ truck. There is still a demographic that simply won't buy a toyota.

GM should walk from the show, and focus on it's problems and it's products like companies in dire situations do. Make better news during the show by announcing major dealer restructuring and steal the media hype from yota.

you have to want to be SMARTER than the enemy. out do them at their own game. make your news BIGGER than THEIRS.

Finally that "excess capacity" will be removed, and consumers can get used to that old phrase from the oligopoly world of the 1960's "Pricing Power."

Currently makers really don't have much pricing power - all the profits come out of squeezing blood from the turnip that is called the "Supply Chain."

Just eliminate the Detroit three and voila, Honda can jack up prices and make it stick.
Sounds just like what Walmart did to many cities in the 90's.
