Automakers Pull Out of NAIAS; GM Remaining?

Automakers Pull Out of NAIAS; GM Remaining?
Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda pull from press confrences...GM still on.
www.gminsidenews.com

We're just a couple weeks shy of being one month away from the start of the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The show, traditionally the biggest in terms of new vehicle debuts, is losing its exhibitors left and right. Ironically the ones in real trouble; General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and Chrysler LLC are still in the show (as of today at least). Yesterday Nissan announced that their Nissan and Infiniti brands were pulling out of the big show this year (and the Chicago show later next year), Mitsubishi has announced it will not be attending the show either. Today word has also surfaced that automotive golden child Honda will not be having any press conferences at NAIAS this year as well, indicating that the automaker will not be revealing any new product. Honda will have a display at the show however.

General Motors is slated to reveal the 2010 Buick LaCrosse at NAIAS. It was initially supposed to show face as the LA Show earlier this month, but GM pushed it back to NAIAS in fear that the new car would get drowned in the negative press surrounding GM's current financial crisis. Stay turned to GMI for the latest regarding the NAIAS pull outs and whether or not GM will be at the show!!

A good sign of the times for the automakers? We think so.

Whats even more crazy is before the Kwame scandal, there was a lot of reports that Cobo was getting a renovation. no word on that since Sept

Detroit is going to lose alot of cash if the show is cancelled. I'd hate to see the figures on hotel, restaurant, and admission losses. I'm sure just with the economy in the tank that revenue will be down already without the cancellations.

Maybe this will wake up those congressman that think there are no problems in the US' car industry.

That'd make way too much sense.

I don't know how to feel about it. In general it's of course a bad thing.. but I wonder if maybe the Japanese aren't quietly making a statement regarding the new unimportance of the North American market. Perhaps it is to add insult to the already injured U.S. automakers.

It's strange that they would all pull out. Honda's probably just in it because they've gotten a minutia of press regarding their plant-towns in the US still providing jobs/etc.

I think this is a good thing, because all of the attention will be on GM and the new LaCrosse.

For Honda to pull the press conference is indicative that they figure money will be tight. So much for the theory that the transplants aren't affected by all this.

Re: Automakers Pull Out of NAIAS; GM Remaining?

The bad news is less prestige to NAIAS. Less hotel reciepts and manufacturer hosted parties.

The sad news is that Chrsler has nothing to show and won't for some time. They shot their wad on the Ram. It is an improvement but it certainly isn't an F-150 and they will get stomped on by the commercial users as their coil link is very limiting on towing and payload. The consumers who just want a truck will like the ride but they are a dwindling breed and I think Dodge had more work truck buyers than boulevard cruisers. Next week during hearings with congress, don't be surprized if Chrysler drops the Chrysler brand. It is the easiest thing that they can do now to restructure and shed themselves of overhead.

The good news, plenty of press and exposure for GM and Ford which have some awesome debuts. The stage is ours. Also it can't get any less awkward than the LA Auto show was.

If Honda is pulling out, there may be a good chance that Toyota would follow soon. This quarter looks like it will be horrible on their books, the few millions they lost in the last quarter may now be billions.

Wouldn't it be a shame of GM pulled out, when their headquarters is within walking distance of the world's premier auto show? Sadly at their projected rate it quite possible they won't have the cash to do it.

The transplants up here are still working overtime to pump out those civics and corollas. Every year it seems Honda has had a new or updated model to show off and this year it seems they have nothing new to fool people with.

What is the media going to do with no GTR at the show? Now all the fantasy will be lost.

People really don't go to auto shows to see family cars. I hope GM reveals more than this. If GM doesn't reveal any promising new concept cars, then they're certainly doomed.

As I mentioned earlier this morning, the following brands have also pulled out: Porsche, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Ferrari, Land Rover and Rolls-Royce...

That is entirely false. People go to autoshows to see possible future purchases. Car enthusiasts may not, but the majority of people go to find their next car.
