The Outback is another story.
And you are mistaken. I've been to both, the bush and the Outback. Have you?

I live in the bush and have driven though the outback. And it matters little if you've been to both, every tourist has. And I would expect nothing less from a person who sees terrain as 'art'.

You non-the-less equate them as the same in terms of danger and risk, because if you didn't you would never make remarks like; "your outback roads are just longer". The isolation resulting from such length has a real consequence...

But I wouldn't buy a Suburban or a Tahoe in OZ even if I were driving it only in the city, and not because of fuel costs, but because our parking lots in main street and shopping centre car parks are smaller than in the US, so they'd be hell to ever park.
Actually the parking lots in the US are the same size as ours..so there goes that theory.

Hold your horses there big boy.

The RTA and local governments in OZ generally use 5.5m by 2.5m for side by side parking (car parks) and 6.1m by 2.5m for parallel main street parking.

That's:

18ft by 8.2ft and 20ft by 8.2ft.

The US local municipal equivalents are:

19ft by 9ft and 24ft by 9ft

or

19ft by 9.5ft and 26ft by 9.5ft

Some US municipalities are even going larger to cater for SUV's.

Oh really?

H3 proponents might want to consider this one simple aspect in between the bluster: Tellingly the Hummer fuel tank holds a paltry 19 Imp gallons or 87 litres - that's less than my 2wd sedan! Gee your "made for that type of terrain" claim won't get you very far into the outback will it? About as useless as tits on a bull and seems insufficient even for typical suburban-based 4X4 weekend ventures into rural Oz let alone the serious stuff in remote conditions

According to > this < the 87 litre Hummer tank will get you a mere 330 miles (in optimal non-4wd conditions) before you start walking. Landcruiser 70 offers the security of standard twin tanks and 180 litres or 47 US gallons delivering 900+ miles, or Nissan Patrol with up to 175 litres

In an outback touring test 4X4 mag reported their Suburban's dashboard visibly vibrated, so badly they expected it might fall off! And who else remembers tales of those 'twin I beam' Ford F-series popping their coil springs clean out of the chassis on the corrugations of outback 'dirt highways' as they rattled themselves into junk

I always thought Hummers were designed to be shot at!

Not much of a difference but going through Los Angeles and New York, you think they are tinier. In the midwest it is different, bit like Australian country towns.

I heard that mining companies were getting 8 months out of the F250 7.3 Diesels."cars". They are now getting 2 yrs out of the Landcruisers. Both type of vehicles needed considerable reworking before they are used by the mining companies.

Rob admittedly its only mere speculation/conjecture on my part, but my first reaction upon seeing the H3 (well the 2nd after its outre styling) was to wonder about the durability aspect of its huge - and undoubtedly very heavy - wheel/tyre package. In other words the stresses imposed by all that mass of unsprung weight continually bouncing around for mile after corrugated mile .. (especially when saddled with a typical touring load)

Personally if the hypothetical question was posed re ultimate 4x4 remote-area 'get you home' dependability by design and capability, between either heavyweight Hummer H3 vs humble 4cyl Citroen 2CV Sahara, then I'd rather bet my life on the ancient Citroen!

nota, if you really want to survive in the WA environment, I suppose you could get an OKA, they were developed specifically for the mines of WA.

I've followed the OKA saga for a long time, many owners seem to become very fond of the brand. Powered by military-spec Perkins Phaser turbo-diesel. While inspecting our local Search & Rescue OKA a few years ago the cops raved about theirs, told of wading it through water around shoulder high. Love the concept and that starship dash and those neat power-assist doors

Very tempting go-anywhere unit, touring heavy-duty style
