Re: 2010 Detroit Auto Show main floor is full, recession officially OVER

For those who do not live in the area, allow me to educate you on Cobo: It is a central icon of power-grabbing by the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan. The Governor has bought Wayne County's (Detroit's) votes by pushing and pushing the Cobo project, and finally a 3rd-party "oversight" regional authority. SO, she's diverting millions of dollars away from Michigan schools towards this hole in the ground in the biggest hole of a City in the nation (yes, they consistently finish 1st or 2nd in crime annually). It should tell you something when local and regional businesses don't want to fund an overhaul project, and that taxpayers are FORCED to foot the bill. I thought it was a true picture of Detroit that last year at the Autorama, car builders were covering their million dollar babies with tarps to protect them from the water dripping down off the roof.
Perhaps people need to accept that Chicago has replaced Detroit's auto show: McCormick Place is a larger and vastly superior venue, easier to reach and in a superiorly safe environment, with better access and MUCH better entertainment venues for businesses.
Detroit should still have a show, but now that there's excitement about India and China coming, along with the dozen or so car companies whom have bailed, with the abscence of local business support - doesn't that just slap you in the face with the truth that THE NAIAS is dead??
I'm tired of people who don't actually live or work in Detroit always coming to Detroit's aide: they've made their bed, they need to lay in it. There's a nice venue just down the street in Oakland County called the Rock Financial Show Place... you can actually park AT THE SHOW and then have a nice meal right after without walking around homeless or pick-pockets.

the millions of dollars you claim that are going to cobo won't put a dent into whats needed for schools! sorry. please provide a link to where you found this information.

Also if you're from the area you'd know that crime is down compared to the past 2 years!

Saw some youtube vids of Detroit and some of the rough areas. It looked like a wasteland that is barely recovering from a nuclear war.

The link is Granholm's website, she line item veto'd school funding and has pushed for the regional authority and state funding thereof.
As for crime, I'm a cop in the area. I know first hand. Need I remind you of gang night the first opening Friday of every Detroit Auto Show?? It's actually been televised locally, but they've done a good job of downplaying it lately. As for arson in Detroit, the numbers don't speak for what my neighbor (DPD arson investigator, I trust what HE has to say) says is really happening when he goes to work. I don't trust the news media after the chop jobs I've seen them do.
I don't want to get on a horse about Detroit, but it frustrates me to see tax dollars going toward something GM / Ford / Chrylser - Fiat won't spend their own money on. That should tell you something!? GM can put billions into the RennCen but not Cobo? Why? See post above.
I wish the backup plan of Rock Financial's replacing Cobo had come through.
I don't go down there to Detroit with the kids, I love them too much.
Any business / money draw in the area helps us all, but Detroit is a lost cause....

Nice one! Im a gamer meself. To tell the truth as bad as and even worse than that. Saw some areas that were really swank in Detroit's heyday looking really horrible like the street scenes from Robocop series.
