2010 Detroit Auto Show main floor is full, recession officially OVER

2010 Detroit Auto Show main floor is full, recession officially OVER

The 2009 North American International Auto Show was a bit of a disaster. The very difficult and uncertain economic conditions resulted in several high-profile automakers dropping out of the exhibition. Among the absent automakers were Nissan, Infiniti, Mitsubishi and Porsche, and a quick jaunt around Cobo's main floor revealed the empty spaces left by those big-time players. The future of the Detroit Auto Show is already looking brighter, however, with the approval of a much-needed overhaul of Cobo Hall, and more good news is coming in the way of a full main floor.

Detroit show organizers aren't yet ready to tip their hand as to which automakers will be attending the show, but among those likely to return are Nissan and Infiniti, as Japan's number three automaker is just too big to stay out of the North American International Auto Show two years in a row. The Detroit Free Press reports that Porsche has been unhappy with the lack of major media coverage at the L.A. Auto Show, and the German automaker could turn to Detroit to get its media fix. Porsche could also find itself sharing space with its new parent, Volkswagen.

While Detroit looks bring back some automakers that were lost last year, North America's biggest auto show could also bring in some newcomers. Fiat's partnership/ownership of Chrysler could mean that Fiat and Alfa Romeo models wind up parked near the Chrysler booth. India's Mahindra group, which is looking to sell trucks and SUVs here in the States, could be another option, as could China's BYD. We're really looking forward to this year's NAIAS, and it will be nice to once again see a full main floor. Another Detroit January, on the other hand, is something we can do without.

It's mentioned that the Cobo Hall was re-done. Did it add any room to make it bigger? If so, is it substantially enough?

Looking forward to seeing how GM presents the core four going forward. Are they under and weird TARP restrictions for putting forth a great effort here?

There hasn't been any construction done at COBO. But the city did just hand cobo over to a regional authority a few weeks ago! hopefully they make something happen quick and soon

I'm hoping GM puts on a new car and concept display that blows everybody away! I have't attended NAIAS the last 2 years, but am planning to go next year. How about the new DTS? The new ATS (concept?), an Impala SS, Park Avenue, and El Camino, a SuperSport Chevelle concept? A TwinTurbo 3.6 Grand National? And on and on.
If your auto company commits late for NAIAS, put them in the basement or somewhere else!

Re: 2010 Detroit Auto Show main floor is full, recession officially OVER

CEOs, CFOs and COOs line up on CNBC which is a bunch of cheerleaders for the stock market and proclaim the recession is over because they have finally laid off enough people that they can show profits again and everyone smiles and they are happy. This country's true effective unemployment rate is over 17% and not dropping. I am one of those unemployed. In this area, my M.B.A. is not worth warm spit and I cannot leave the area without being dishonorable with my mortgage debt due to the plummeting MichiGONE housing market. Go Ahead! Try to convince us, the 17%, that the recession is over. Gp Ahead! The best they did at Cobo was repair some of the roof leaks. They were quite bad, but the city council announced those problems only existed when it rained and it was usually too cold in January, during the Auto Show, to rain............ Yup! They SAID that!

I am in complete agreement. One of the smartest things anyone has ever said was when Alan Greenspan told Congress: "The stock market is NOT the economy."

Re: 2010 Detroit Auto Show main floor is full, recession officially OVER

I see the measure of the recession being over will be an increase in sales. They have pared their businesses down to protect profits and some may have actually increased their profit margin.
Hopefully the show will make a profit and see a large number of visitors. I guess that depends on whether anything newsworthy gets released to draw the interest.

Re: 2010 Detroit Auto Show main floor is full, recession officially OVER

One good method of assessing the economy is the sale of tickets for the gala black tie opening event on Friday night. Years ago, you had to hurry to pay $250 to get a ticket before they sold out. Then they got greedy and raised the price to $400? and still sold out. Recently, they have not. So let's watch and see how they do this year. Personally, I no longer go to the auto show even though it is just down Jefferson from Grosse Pointe Park, where I live. It would be like letting an alcoholic into a party store. I have enough of a problem without being encouraged further.
