VW boss Martin Winterkorn says gas and diesel engines will be around for a long time to come, but "the future belongs to all-electric cars." The automaker is staking a claim to that future with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain it calls Twin Drive. It will debut in a Golf fitted with a 122-horsepower diesel engine and an 82-horsepower electric motor.

Re: VW TwinDrive hybrid

So Japan and Germany have helped fund their own car maker's hybrid plans.

I haven't heard of any large scale U.S. contribution to GM, Chrysler or Ford for a similar end-goal since the Clinton administration.

I'm pretty sure the tax breaks that GM/Ford/et all, receive more than make up for it. Besides I'm pretty sure both Obama and McCain mentioned something about making a contribution to US automakers to produce efficient cars.

Yeah, but will it be riddled with recalls and problems. Will they halt sales while the A/C problem is being resolved. Notice i didn't say fixed. That is a dirty word in Germany.
