Even for pre-production, that's a very sloppy interior. I would hope that the wood grains would match and flow into each other.
I'm not so sure about the semi-integrated center stack either. Piano black?
Looks like a possible ergonomic nightmare with iDrive positioned next to the shifter like that. But we'll see.

We'll see, I guess. I'm glad they went back to the proper shifter position though.
Looks like they added radio buttons -- and more HVAC buttons? -- to the console, thus eliminating some fiddling with the iDrive. It might only be needed for some esoteric things. But, yeah, the positioning is non-optimal.

They could not have gotten it more wrong. Eww.... I have lost most of my respect for BMW. They are not charming Euro-sport cars anymore. They are like really bad abstract art on wheels. And I like abstract art. But this is bad.

Call me crazy but, I like the old one better. Pre-production or not, it just doesn't seem very good, or very fresh.

the class is tough though, here is what has to contend with: the Merc copied the previous gen in the shifter and overall design

The S-class has one ugly interior....
The LS is "meh" at most, very generic looking.

The XJ interior is fairly nice, I have a feeling it won't be sticking around for much longer though...

The A8's interior on the other hand looks fantastic. very elegant IMHO, nice mixture of materials as well.

The S-Class is very high quality interior; however, it is needlessly complex with the hideaway buttons. Nor did the buttons make any sense initially.

The LS is the worst interior of them all. Very button happy. Very cheap materials for this class of car. I don't believe it's worth the money you shell out.

The XJ's interior is very nice. Highly details, impeccable materials, unmatched attention to detail. But it remains dated. And you're right, it'll be gone in 1-2 years. It'll probably adopt XF's JaguarDrive, among other accoutrements.

A8 is the only interior I can live with from Audi. Ergonomically, it's the best. Material quality is unmatched. Not really sure if "elegant" is the word to describe it, but it is sophisticated.

I just find the interior of the S-Class to be very unattractive, the materials can be wonderful, but if the design isn't there, then there leaves very little to be desired from that interior (for me at least). I think that the shape of the hood covering the gauge cluster and info screen doesn't fit the look of the dash, and in turn makes it look like it has been tacked on, almost as an afterthought. The main portion of the dash has really odd proportioning, it looks like it belongs in a minivan to be honest, the lack of anything but the two doors below the wood strip and then the way that it meets the center console is a little abrupt, I prefer a center console that flows into the dash, so they don't look like they have been just set upon each other.

With the Audi, I guess it just depends on what you perceive as being elegant. I really like clean modern lines, those paired with the planar design give it a very refined look. In many cases, to me elegance is in the simplicity of a design.
