Are Smarts allowed in the USA?
I was just wondering if the smart fortwo meets all of the safety regulations of the US? If so could you go to Canada and buy one then drive it down here and drive it around in the US?

Re: Are Smarts allowed in the USA?
The Smart fortwo is one of the safest cars in it's section! In Germany we have hard safety regulations so I think Smart wouldn't reduce them!
My neighbor is driving a fortwo convertible! But it wouldn't be a car for me because they're all half or full automatic and that's really boring...

Be ready for a 1 or 2 star NHTSA rollover rating. As long as you have no problem with that (not my cup of tea, but to each their own), have fun.
I wouldn't ride in one, much less buy or drive one. |

Re: Are Smarts allowed in the USA?
As the owner and daily driver of a Smart ForTwo Cabrio, I have to say it's a great car. It's very safe. It's fun to drive. It gets tons of attention. Sure, it's not ideal to go to Costco or Home Depot, but it's great for commuting and grocery getting. It gets great gas mileage. It drives like a big car. I wouldn't want to get hit with a Suburban or H2 with it, but I'm sure it's safer than an Aveo or or similar smaller car.
With ABS and traction control and 4 airbags and a complete safety cage, I'm not worried about driving it. There's a company called ZAP that has started importing them in California (They usually have one on ebay). Canada has stricter bumper regulations and stuff like that over the USA, and they have no problem allowing them. Mine: ![]()
