I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!
I don't see an ounce of creativity or effort in this design. Typical, highly predictable, boring BMW.

"What is left unsaid in all this is the fact that conventional cars with a tank full of petrol are far greater fire hazards than electric cars will ever be. Some 185,000 vehicles catch fire in America each year, with no fewer than 285 people dying as a consequence. But, then, people have been living with the hazard of petrol for over a century. Irrationally, electric-vehicle fires are perceived as somehow more worrisome simply because they are new." - The Economist

I had no idea. Thanks for the info. I always thought that the 8 was a really cool car.
I'm confused about this BMW sub-brand. What is it supposed to represent and how will it be different from the BMW brand? So, there won't be an 8 series coupe to go along with the 7 series, but they will have an "8-like" coupe in their sub-brand? The car in the picture above looks to cost way more than $150,000.

The BMW i8 is BMW's entry into the premium luxury sportscar/supercar segment -- essentially what 8-series is.
i8 is a performance plugin hybrid. All-electric range is supposed to be around 20 miles, with overall mpg at 70mpg or so.
So the question is, what exactly does i8 compete with -- F-Type or R8 or ETron? Or both? In some ways, the i8 will probably be closer to Jaguar C-X75 and Porsche 918 -- hybrid supercars that are en route.
Here's the actual production rendering from BMW, with Roadster to follow:
Seen testing:
Estimate price seems to be quoted at $150-200,000 -- well in line with R8, a bit higher than F-Type (which isn't hybrid at this point), and far less than the estimated prices of C-X75 and 918.

The i8 is not the 8 series replacement, and in many ways it could be considered more of a modern day M1 than a modern day 8 series. Were there to be an 8 series replacement it would in many ways not be utterly divergent from the Mercedes CL a large personal luxury coupe.
